Dalmatians??

Post by CkZona »

The other day this people a street over were having Dalmatian pups. I rarely ever see them so i asked a few questions. What are they used for? They said they are good guard dogs and said that some people use them for hunting boars in Europe and hog here in the US. Kinda surprised me. Does anyone have a dalmatian and use them to hunt hogs??

I've never seen one used on game. I didn't know what they were good for, other than being in fire department pictures. Maybe someone on here has used some.

I don't like them because my neighbor's dalmations had one of my calves stretched one day when I got in.

Where are they? Not being a smartass. I would really like to see one that would do anything other than bite people or tame livestock.

I can write on this computer that my culls are "hog dogs". Don't believe everything you read!

i have read of one being used as a squirrel dog in full cry. i have also heard they can be made into fair pointers (which makes sense since the brits pretty much created the breed from english pointer). i have never heard of one being used for actual guard type work & i've heard of a lot of funky breeds used for that on the bandog board including jack russell & poodles, even one greyhound.
i'm not saying no way no how not ever, but i'd have to see multigenerational photos before i would believe anything but one sport that happened to do the job.
keep in mind i have a 1936 dog encyclopedia compiled by the editor/publisher for dog world magazine at the time. in one article in the book he wrote of receiving a letter from a fella asking about a leopard dog for hunting. the ignorant douche bag directed him to dalmation breeders. it is not unlikely that this sort of thing is the basis of the breeder's story.

Dalmatians are another breed that has had the hunt bred out of them by the show people. Kinda like the great danes its rare to find a breeder that actually breeds for hunting dogs.

How hard is it to take a breed that has been show bred to cull until you have a hunting line established?

breeding the damage done by show breeders out of a breed is directly related to how long they have been "improving" it. and how technical the original work is. that is my pet peeve is all the damage being done to the many breeds that have been developed through the centuries. they all want the same dog in different wrappers that would be ok except it deprives those who have a actual use for those breeds

Pegleg I agree 110%. They take something that someone else strived to make. And ruin it just to make look like what they think it should. Bunch of crap. Makes me wish some of the people that created different breeds that are now ruined were here now to knock some sense into people.

all show fancy assertions to the contrary, the dal was about 95% made by brits mostly from english pointers. in the 70s & early 80s they had more pointer bred in under the table to try to eliminate PRA (an eye disease) because the AKC wouldn't let them do it openly like they let the Irish setter breeders do w/ english setter in the 60s.
there is a very good reason its called show FANCY, it sure as hell ain't because they produce working dogs.

There was a topic on UKC that the AKC droped Plotts because of bear baying. Funny the topic disapeared? Many posted comments said good ridance. My post was that the AKC destroyed many breeds bred puprpose so they saved the Plott hound from their distruction.

dalmatians were bred to be coach dogs following the coaches through the country side to keep off bandits never heard of them being bred to hunt anything but a shady spot in the yard
