I think dogs can tell the difference in animals of the same species. I think dogs smell far more than we give them credit for, but how to test this? I hunted with a dog that would not run a bad bear. If he went on a race with the other dogs it was a easy bear. If he turned and came back in the first few minutes even on a cold track, the other dogs would have there hands full with a mean bear. He seemed to know the difference in bears right away. I also had a good coon dog as a kid that would not run my pet coon. Dewey

Dogs can recognize humans by there odor, can recognize other dogs by their odor, and they can recognize different bears by their odor as well.

It can’t explain it much better than that.

And that is so true! I'm sometimes amazed at how little credit some guys will give their dog's noses.

i have 4 house cats and my terriers dont mess with them but if a stay has came around they will trail it up and tree it. they also wont run the resident deer around my house but get them in the woods and they will run deer. so yes i think they can tell the difference in bear.

I beleive the awnser is yes. the next question is do they care. I have a few that do. and one bitch dog i am talking about wants a hog or bear first and if none around she will run a deer but the first hog or bear she comes across she will switch and if a buck and a doe are running together and split 9 time our of 10 she will take the buck and not the doe.

dont know why just the stinker they are the better she likes them. (she will trail at least a 10 hr track so it is not lack of nose.)
