I have no experience personally but a friend of mine who does this stuff has talked to me a plenty and answered damn near every question I have ever asked of him. If I was personally doing it, I would be running some Kemmer/Stephens crosses on bear.

I run and catch bear with my curs,I like them on just about anything. They can cold trail when they need to and fly on a hot track .They are just like hounds as they have their faults also. Some don't cold trail as well as some hounds and some don't tree like a comp walker.I like the fact that I can use them on any game I am hunting at the time.I hunted hounds a lot of years and caught a lot of game ,but I never had a hound that could do all the tasks that these curs can.I have a little cur that if she would decoy she would just about perfect. She will rig, trail, stay in a tough race and tree super and is cold trailing well now.She not three years yet so she has a lot of hunting years left in her.I don't know if you would make the great bear dog by crossing the Kemmer with the Stephens as they have a lot of differences that may not mix well. The right combo might work great though.Bdog has a little Stephens that is fast and trees super on bear.My little Kemmer is fast and a super tree dog niether are very gritty, both rig.If you want grit you may loose it on the Stephens cross, but I would bet you would add some speed.
