how you like your b&ts
how you like your b&ts
Now I know every dog is different but over all how do you like there tracking ability killing instict gritt treeing and all that good stuff
Re: how you like your b&ts
B&t are great dogs. I don't have one, but my dad does and they were very gritty, very good trackers, and at times very fast. To be honest any of the b&t, redbone, bluetick, treeing walker, plott are all top notch hounds.

Re: how you like your b&ts
After raising registered black and tans for about 10 years I found I liked them best crossed with about 1/4 walker and 1/4 plott. LOL!
Seriously I had some good black and tans exceptional bear and coon dogs. Some of them are a little hame headed and the outcrosses seemed to work better on lions. One thing black and tan will put in your dogs is tough they have some bottom in them and they will test your patience as well. Probably no more beautiful hound out there than a good looking long earned black and tan.

Re: how you like your b&ts
Now I'm no expert, but I had a half B&T / walker for several years and he made up for lots of my personal hunting weaknesses. I now have a Duncan pup that is a damn fine dog. He isn't the best tree dog yet but he's getting better. At f months he was a very compitent trail dog and isn't afraid to grab fur. We dropped a bobcat out of a tree last winter that decided to use his head as a perch but not for long!!!!!!

The best dog I ever had and probably will ever have was a black and tan named Nellie.
She didnt see a lion until she was five. Too much time chasing deer, foxes and coyotes but with the help of a shocking collar, finally showed her a lion and somethings just clicked inside. Over the next nine years she saw around a hundred lions. She hunted right to the end and was always the last dog out. She died last December from old age.

Black and tans are by far my favorite dog to look at, especially that one of killroys right there, but every one I have owned was so mouthy and loud that I got rid of them pretty quick. alot of guys like loud babbling dogs, but I'm a fan of a quiet trailing pack. I don't like a silent trail, but I hate when it sounds like they are fighting the cat/ bear all the way from the truck to the tree. that is the only downfall I could ever find in them. as far as hunt, dam good dogs.

Sorry to hear that, however , I do not believe this is par for the course. Have had at least one or two around for a lot of years and can say that I have never had that problem. As with all dogs, some dogs within a breed are better than others. Personally I like a good bawl mouth on a dog and B&T's seem to have them with a fair amount of consistancy. Have seen a good share that would work a cold bobcat or lion real well. Like the smaller ones over the more heavy dogs. I do believe that due to their coloring they do not handle the heat as well as lighter colored dogs but they are sure hard to beat in the cooler climates or down on the river running coon.

That's what I said, I don't like their bawl mouth yippy yappin up the trail. not just the ones I have owned, but I have never been around a quiet b&t. I still like the way they look and hunt just a little babbly for me. I think the same of most redbones. from the time you turn out till the time you round up they never quit barking. When I hear my dogs making a hell of a racket I can be sure they have somethin caught, not just exited trailing. you show me a quiet black and tan and It'll be my favorite dog.

Talk with the guys in your area. I don't know of a whole lot of good B&T dogs around here. Go to field trials and meet some people, that would be a good way to find some good local breeding. It also depends on what and where you plan on hunting. After you are getting under trees, it is a lot easier to experiment with different dogs.
I had a Black and Tan that I gave away a few years back, he was a little slow for cats, but the guy I gave him to caught piles of coon with him. He was a real nice dog but to slow.

"Yippy yappin" and "Bawl mouthed" are two different things. I, as you, cannot stand a dog that is two free with its mouth. I also can't stand a silent trailer, you never know whats going on until the dog trees. I, like others, get alot of enjoyment out of listening to the dogs run and work a track. And as far as I am concerned there is nothing prettier to listen to than a good bawl mouthed dog work a track from cold to hot. Especially when it rolls over to a steady tree chop.

i had great luck with them as coondogs but as big game hounds i was having trouble with the speed . i couldnt consistently get speed so i switched to walkers , but i loved them black dogs they had everything else.

Re: how you like your b&ts
i got a b&t last feb he bayed and treed his first bear at 6 months old never did a drag and the day before was his first time out of the box on a bear i was really impressed hes got a huge voice i gusse what you call a bawl mouth but really slow when i road him i hope he gets faster but theres no better looking dog than a b&t
Re: how you like your b&ts
Gotta agree with ya yard dog on the hound music. my dogs are not stone cold silent, but those b&ts and redbones 20 barks or bawls or whatever per second. sounds like they are fighting sasquatch from the truck to the tree. if they would shut up and trail they might make the chase a little shorter. the reason I don't like a loud pack of dogs is when I cold trail a lion. I feel like the lion hears them 2 miles away and heads on out making for a long day. bobcats I have seen my quieter dogs come right up on em before they even know there's dogs comin. You aint gona surprise no lion or bober with no babbalin bawlmouth coon hound. I'd rather hear a yodler in a canyon than a bawlmouth.

Re: how you like your b&ts
I hate to stir the fire, but a bawl mouth is far from a babbler. This yodeling you speak of is babbling. The long drawn out bawl is what a bawl mouth dog makes and is for sure sweet mtn. music. Much of what a lot of Black and Tans and old style Blueticks sound like.
