Some individuals are suprisingly cold nosed and in the last while through selective breeding I am getting a higher percentage with that quality plus the speed.

These hounds are normally cast free with the colder nosed hounds right from the beginning and work the trail according to what their nose is telling them. Sometimes one of them will actually get a trail started amongst the colder nosed hounds and then they join in.

Working closely with them we have identified the individuals with colder noses and those are the ones I've been breeding. On leopard hunts where we release hounds on finding tracks or off of kills I have often used my pressure dogs to start the track, that way I get an idication of how close the cat may be.

This becomes necessary when you're loaded with back to back hunts with clients and you need to conserve your pack by not wearing them out on to many long trails = management.

Hope it makes a bit of sense.

My friend Richard Morgan has a bunch of this type of dog and kills lots of jackal and lynx. He has two garmin kits one for each pack. The collars go on the lead dogs. He has just recorded a chase on a jackal that went damn close to 60 km through really hilly country. They caught the jackal and killed it and thanks to the garmins recovered the kill !! Believe me they did not walk that jackal to death they put the heat on him and kept up the pressure.(The data was downloaded onto his computer and the distance worked out accordingly )

So yes JC these hounds got stamina as well. This catch was recent and it the driest windiest time of the year for us so that may tell you something about the nose quality.

I've just had a garmin kit arrive with a client of my brothers and cant wait to start using it. Believe the guy may have sourced it from Buddy - well I asked him to get it there anyway.Hopefully I'll be able to get some accurate data on chases soon .

Thanks for your interest in these pressure dogs.

Roy.
