At what age do most of you guys retire your old dogs or do you just hunt them till they drop?

I noticed this on TV other night where a Vet had some medicine and he just sprayed it on their food and it stopped their pain and they didn't know they were taking it.

I used my old black dog as my lead dog until he was 12 years old though the last couple of years he started having problems staying in long or fast races. He suffered frostbite on a front foot when he was 10 and was never quite the same. Even after that, on select warm days I'd still take him and let him tag along. This photo is of an April lion he caught by himself when he was 15 years old. As it turned out, it ended up being his last.........I had to put him down in September of that year.

As long as a dog wants to hunt and can make the races, let 'em go.....it's what they love.

I have used glucosamine tablets for older hound and results are great takes about 2-3 weeks before you can see results you wont know its the same dog. I go to wal-mart and get 1000mg tablet bottle has 100 pills for around 8.00$. I give 1 tablet per day. For that price you cant go wrong.
The home of TOPPER AGAIN bred biggame hounds.

The worst part about the older dogs it thier attitude. Them old lead dogs get to where they won't run a covered track.

My partner retired his lead dog this year because she could not keep up with the catch dogs any more. She was only 8 but a prior injury really slowed her down. She could do the job, but as soon as the pack passed her, she would pick up another track, and pull half the other dogs out of the lead. Another split race... another one gets away.

I noticed my old lead last time I took her out with my young dogs for trianing. I jumped the bear out of the tree and as soon as them young dogs passed her, she wanted to false tree. It pulled the new lead back and the bear got clean away.
