Should I let my lion dogs run coyotes or racoones

I am just getting started in colorado and have got a couple of good lion dogs and was wondering if it would ruin my dogs for running lions.

I let my dogs run coon. I would never allow my dogs to have intrest in coyotes!! there are too many coyotes out where I lion hunt and that would create a disaster for your lion hunts.

Unless you want to run coyotes......Dont let them run coyotes. Those stinking things are everywhere and will cause you nothing but grief.

Where there are lions, there are usually yotes too.. Coon is another story. In Montana there was never an issue running dogs on lion one day and running coons another night because you'd rarely (usually never) be in a situation where you'd risk cutting a coon track while lion hunting. But if you let them chase a Coyote, you're gonna have some big time frustration..

Thanks for the info. It sounds like I should leave the dogs at home and just keep chasing coyotes on my snowmobile and shooting them.

I would (and do) run them on coon whenever you can. Here in Montana you won't ever cut a coon track while cat hunting and if you cut a cat track while coon hunting, who cares? I agree that a lion dog is just that, but here in Montana, there's a lot of life to live between seasons and coons help pass the time. Running them beats the hell out of sitting on a chain.

I agree with sheimer. You will get much more enjoyment from your dogs if you run lion and coon. I can think of several houndsmen who run both and have no problems. I can think of a few who run bear, lion, and coon, all with the same dogs. Running coyotes is another story. I break my dogs off of coyotes. Just too many of them wherever you hunt, whether it be coon or lion you are hunting.

Well, I am swimming against the current I guess, because I run the living snot out of yotes in the winter, and whenever I cut a decent lion track I run it too. I don't free cast for lion in the winter, and I hunt lion from the saddle in the summer and I have NEVER and I repeat, NEVER had any trouble from running yotes.

I have had yotes come into to more than one lion and bobcat tree and never had a problem.

So, until, or unless you have actually done it, and done it a lot, maybe keep an open mind.

I had the same concerns before I added yotes to the list of critters I run. The problems everyone warned me about have simply FAILED to come true period. Been running yotes hard for about 6 years now.

the problem i have here is coyote and wolf have a very simular smell i don't need what has already happened to me once, and running yotes in wolf country is BAD !!!

I guess for me i just have NO desire to run coyotes anyway.So you are right , I shouldnt say no if I have never tried it.
One thing I did have happen, with dogs that have never been allowed to run coyotes,went like this: We were lion hunting in shitty conditions in central Nv. and we had found a track up one canyon and returned to the truck to get dogs.we let the dogs out of the box to load in sleds to take up the mountain. 2 dogs went burning out for the valley and pulled another pup with them.All 3 were open the whole way.We saw them cross a field with a yote just ahead of them. By time we got the truck unhooked and turned around they were out of hearing.We spent 2 hours getting them back and the lion track had melted out and was gone. Dont know if they caught the yote or not but I was hell bent on breaking them off yotes after that.

I've run all three Plus deer and elk and it's not very enjoyable for me...

Having Broke dogs will save you allot of headache.

I have a hell of a time and I've never intentionally tried to catch a yote, Although I've heard the dogs catch a couple.. So I've done it.. And Unfortunately not by choice I've done it allot and It sucks...

I can tell you the last couple seasons and the more Bent my dogs get.. has been much more enjoyable and I've had allot less train wrecks just by getting one ore two "Bent" dogs.. And I wouldn't call them Broke..

Around here we have to cross alot of Yote tracks and several Bear tracks to get a cat started.
