California people ANY SUCCESS YET with BEAR HUNTING?

Post by Houndman99 »

I took my one year old bluetick out last Friday for bear hunting. He opened on some deer scent and took off. I spent the WHOLE ENTIRE DAY looking for his ars. I was gonna kick the shit out of him if i caught him. But couldn't find him. I looked looked and looked. I got tired of looking and went back to the car. THERE HIS ars was, lying down next to the car. He didn't get the deer so he came back to look for me while I was looking for him. I was going to kick his ars but next time when he opens on a deer track his ars is gonna get kicked. Probably gonna take him out this weekend and see if we can get a bear this time.

oh one thing is that this is my first year with a hound, training is difficult because we can't train our dog year round with bear, my hound probably don't even know what he's chasing after, or the smell of bear. so HUNTING AIN'T EASY. ESPECIALLY HOUND TRAINING. but PERSISTENCE WILL PAY.

But let me know Californians how you guys are doing with your hounds?

I'm sure you can train year round. Just modify your methods. Drags work great for many different situations. Most of my pups training I don't leave my ranch to do. My pups were broke off deer easy. Wrap electric fence around a peice of deer hide in the kennel solves your trashing problems if you do it young enough.

Good luck with that big pup and I wouldn't be too hard on him until ya get him on some bear so he knows what good game is, don't let him loose until ya find a good bear track you think he can smell then try it. Back to the ?, we've treed or caught at least 1 each weekend so far. Mike

First two weeks of season were a little slow for us, and HOT and DRY. But since we've picked it up and treed 2-3 bears a weekend.

Like someone said, excersice that pup year round and don't let him sit around. Run him on drags, or get him going good on Fox or Coon, as you can train year-round on either.

The bears are out feeding like crazy. I noticed they are starting to not run as far before they tree. Putting up at least a bear a day. It has been fun! Just got home to take a few days off in between clients and then I will be back up to camp to run some more. Happy Hunting!

I don't think you should be kicking your pups arse for not getting you a bear at one year old after it's first couple outings, but it's your dog.

I've had to work way too hard lately and my pup is young so no bears with hounds.

Not yet.

Casey and his son came up here a couple weeks ago, we treed 1 twice and the dang thing wouldn't stay up. They had a good time and I think they're hooked on bear. Mike
