Well rico I tell by your remarks you don't do much bear hunting. I have done some, I catch 2-3 bear a year and see very few on the ground. that should tell you somthing right there.

You are right,this doe's tell me something.If you are really only catching 2-3 bear a year,you need some new dogs.I can believe you see very few on the ground.Probably because your butt is glued to the seat of your truck and you just keep picturing those brindle dogs crawling all over that bear.Let's see your pictures of what a real beardog is so I will know when I see one.

Dude, you don't need me to show you a bear dog. A day will come when you see a dog and you will say, now that is a bear dog. Until then keep putting the boot to the ground and keep on trying.

I say pick whatever kind/breed of dog you like best, and get a pup out of some proven parents, then hunt the fur off it. Your more likely to get a good dog/gritty dog out of parents that are the same, but its not always the case. To say any one breed is dominating anything is rediculous.

Walkers work for me. They might not tree them all, but pretty damn close to it. Anyone who says thats not enough, is stupid or is lying to themself. I'd rather have dogs that give their all and have a bear get by once in a blue moon, than have dogs killed and beat up constantly.

Now boys lets not get all worked up over this picture. It is mine and catch is trying real hard to get me worked up over it and that is all it is. It's not working
When I got there the bear was trying to climb the tree ( it is to the right and out of the picture) the dogs kept pulling him down and rushing at the dogs. There were 5 dogs hurt real bad and took alot of staples one of them had to be put down, the bear is standing/sitting on this dog in the picture.

No I would not call these dogs real bear dogs. Most of them are right about a year old and the oldest is 4. Most of these dogs I was running for guys on here and most of them it was their 1st 2nd and 3rd bear. If any of you have a true bear dog that has only seen 1 to 3 bear and doing better than these I would love to see them.
This picture can be faught about forever and ever,but the fact is these young dogs and pups put up and stopped and were under more kills this year than catch will see in his lifetime.

Funny thing was the dog under the bear was a plott, and no it was not gritty in anyway, but it was a pretty nice dog it would bay back pretty far, this was it's 3rd bear and I am not sure what happened, just too slow I guess. But I am sure these picture experts can give you a full story better than me.

been gone all weekend and this is the first one i read, wow! Like they say, the world wouldn't go round if everybody was too smart to work at Mcdonalds, guess the same goes for hound hunters, not sure how, but it obviously must. If I could have one question answered it would be why does almost everybody dig their heels in and declare catch to be full of it, instead of consider what he sees as valid and just maybe think about it? Go hunt with him, I did, it's a whole bigger world out there than what ya might think. I can guarantee that the vast majority of you would give up an appendage to own some of the dogs he's made and sold.

i get a kick out of the people who think they are superior . and that they all need to take us to school. there dogs are superior. etc... even if you dont own a topnotch beardog at present doesnt mean you dont know what one is .lots of bears have been killed with baydogs. some people run lots of dogs and a pack mentality increases the grit .all we were alowed in maine was 4 dogs for years. some even hunt with one or two . you go on feeling superior though . we will fill our beartags just fine .

If a guy doesn't see many bear on the ground (couple a year), but prides his dogs on how "gritty" they are, how would he come to that conclusion.

I'm just a second rate hunter with second rate dogs, but I usually wait until I see a dog in action on a caught one to see if it's gonna be a decent bear dog. And contrary to popular belief on the WWW, you don't need a dog to crawl down a bear's throat to have a successfull bear hunt. You just need them to stop it long enough to put a bullet in it. Seen a lot of bear's in trees by dogs that aren't very good bear dogs. Haven't seen many bear on the ground with dogs that aren't though.

Besides, how they act on a caught one is only part of what they need to do. All the grit in the world won't do a guy a bit of good if they can't jump the track. Most guys I see that don't have success, it isn't from having enough grit. Just my opinion.

I think we'll just keep stumbling along with the dogs we've got and not try to keep up with the legends. From the sounds of it, those gritty stick dogs are a dime a dozen. Oh how nice it would be to live in the land of yard fulls of hair pulling SOBs, no vet bills, and trophy B&C tough boars being force to climb by sheer dog power. Too bad I'm forever stuck on this side of the fence.

So now you are saying you can't have nose and grit. Let me guess your dogs can trail like a bloodhound. You should hunt out west and see what tough trailing conditions are. Gritty stick hair pulling double tough SOBs aren't a dime a dozen and that is why you don't think they exist. I can tell there are dogs that can mix up day after day, pull and eat a bears ass off and not get one stitch in it. If you have dogs that will let a bear chew on a dog you just a well kill the whole pack. It is nice to have a pack of dogs that will make a bear climb by sheer power and have no vet bills. That is called brains big guy.


Oh kordog, I hunt three to four dogs most of the time. I don't need 12-20 dogs to tree a bear.

Pretty sure yer not gonna get an autograph from any of em, but far as them having a bigger brain than you, thats really not that hard to imagine, I don't think it takes much.

Here's just a little personal info on Mister Catch. I thought he was so full of crap that I drop him a pm to see if he would back up all this talk about these bear killers he hunts.He told me any day that I wanted to go, he was ready.So the following weekend I drove a few hundred miles not know what I was getting into.The next morning he met me in some of the roughest country that I'd seen.We checked the first bait and sure enough it had been hit. He said he'd get his dogs.When he came back he had 3 dogs,one 2yrs and two 8 month old pups.Turned them loose and they were gone we waited maybe 15 minute when they turn back towards us. About this time I thought he would turn in more dogs,he said thats all he had.It wasn't long and the bear and dogs were to us,there wasnt a time when one of those dogs wasn't hanging off that boar.Needless to say he went up.Catch made a believer out of me. He has high expectations of what a bear dog should be, and doesn't settle for less.The next morning i watch the same three dogs pile on another one that didn't want to go up,it was long and he did.
I'm not hacking on the pict of poco's but from what i seen if it would of been Catches dog they'd been hanging all over that bear.Don't let him crap you about 2-3 bears a year,from what I seen he has know problem putting them up.JMO
