need help in picking good traking system.

I am tring to get in to hounds and need a traking system I'v talked to a lot of people about tracking systems and still havent made up my mind on the one that will work good for me.
In your opinuon what is the best traking collar for the deep rock mountains and what works the best for you. Thanks for replys!!!!!

I am sold on the garmin with the dc30.
I dont even use my old johnson collars any more.
I can get to the dogs faster with the garmin and I can see which dog is in the lead and which one is screwing around.

quck trac, wildlife and marshell all make good boxes.....as far a garmin is concerned there is no way i would turn a dog loose here in utah with just a garmin collar...they are nice when they work but when you loose signal your helpless and the dogs might only be 3/4 mile away...everybody i hunt with that has garmin also runs telemtry collars so they can find there dogs when they get out of garmin range...

We had a Johnson collar that was taken off a dog on the highway off La Sal, was left on the mountain for over a year before dad and I walked up and got it. It still worked great and was in perfect condition.

Garmin can't last what, 3 days??

The only reason I would get a garmin is if I wanted to know exactly what side of the road they were on and to answer the question of "I wonder where that bear race went today"

It is just an extra collar that really serves no purpose except giving better directions to where your dog is, as long as you can get to it within a few days.

Learn your country and the different sounds the box makes, you call learn to tell what is bounce and what is true, when you are straight across from the dog and about how far it is, weather it is getting picked up or going up a hill or treed.

We have all had this debate before. I used telemetry with success for quite a few years. I wouldn't have gone in the woods without it.

So you could buy telemetry,

$1000.00 For the box
$150.00 per collar
$80.00 for a decent non-directional
$100.00+ for a directional antenna

So then you could have (like me) $2500.00+ in tracking equipment that just sits around while you track your dogs with the Garmin. Haven't used my Telemetry in a few years. I stay close to the dogs, the Garmin makes it that much easier. And no more headaches!

No question first buy a garmin then see if you think you need tel. Reason is you can cut off game, see behavior of the chase to determine what you are chasing etc. More accurate correction and determine what each dog is doing. It is endlessly useful beyond simple tracking.

if you have a garmin it shouldnt take you three days to find your dogs.

i think a garmin is the best, hands down! i have two just in case one takes a crap, which hasnt happened yet. i also have a f&l electronics box with johnson collars, but have never had to use them. i my opinion that crap is junk compared to the garmin! unless you have a lot of extra gas that needs to be burned, running arround trying to get a strong signal, or maybe you have plenty of time and dont have to worry about wolves finding your dogs before you do. if that is the case then by all meens stick with the old outdated telemetry junk. JMO.

I wouldn't even consider turning my dogs out with just a Garmin on.I care about my dogs too much for that.I've had 2 telemetry collars go bad on me in 11 years and 3 Garmin collars go bad on me in 2 years.Garmin does not have anywhere close to the same durability and reliability as a telemetry collar.$150 for a good telemetry collar is pretty cheap insurance in my book.

I think that you should have as much tracking equipment as you can afford. I have a WLM blue box that I have had for years cost is 700 just sent it in for repair after 10 years cost 230 to fix collars work good from wlm or johnsons this bear season I had a dog get picked up on the mountain and they took it in to the town next to the mountian I was hunting 15 miles or so down the road. when the dog got picked up I lost my beep and drove to the top of the mountain got a signal straight at town I was not very happy drove to town and walked around with my box in hand for about 10 min and found the dog in a live trap in a back yard luckly the guy that lived there had left for work or I might be doing some jail time but a garmin wound not have told me that dog was in town on the other hand I can drive down the road with my garmin and pin point where my dogs crossed the road get out find the dog tracks and the bear track and reassure myself that my dogs are not running trash and don't walk my butt off taking the long way to tree and can see how is in front and so on and so forth so get it all when you can e-collar telematry gps in the words of GI JOE '' Knowing is half the battle''

I guess I would say that it all depends on accessability to the country your hunting. I'm with B-Plott and Trueblue...I wouldn't turn loose a dog with a Garmin system alone. If the dogs go into roadless country and your collar dies you are s.o.l. That is still where telemetry is better than Garmin. Don't get me wrong I own a Garmin system and love it, but have used my telemetry several times since owning my Garmin. So if I could only afford one system....I would buy a telemetry system. Try to find a good used one.....people are selling them all the time. You can buy a good used telemetry system pretty reasonable, and maybe afford a Garmin? Telemetry works and has worked to find hounds for years....its just not as sweet as looking at a screen and saying....hmmm.... my dog is 1/2 mile North of me But you won't beat the battery life or range of a telemetry system with a Garmin. dont get me wrong, i use both. i bought the garmins first, and that is what i ran for awhile, by its self, but i did buy a telemetry system and now use it just in case something might go wrong, but i have never needed it, and often wonder why did i waste me money for something that i have yet to have to use. i have found the garmins to be a invaluable tool that i wouldnt hunt without.

MUST BE NICE USING A GARMIN!!!!!! We are not allowed to use gps only telemetry. So myself and most guys around here use the trx 1000 (blue box). And i really like the range of the marshal collars my buddy has em and that is my next investment i have a couple johsons and an older wildlife collar newer wildlife rats quick track, the older wildlife gets the best range by far. I think the collars make all the difference in the world in range and strenght of the signal. I would love to run garmin but i would also use a telemtry collar with it, like mentioned before the dogs can be 10 miles in 10 minutes it seems sometimes and i dont know how the garmin would hold up in the country i hunt at that range.. JMO. have a good one and good luck with whatever you decide.
