my garmin is sometimes showing me that my dogs are 4 or 5 hundred yards behind me when in fact they are in front of me and it losses signal all the time throw it away and get new one or what

Are you using some high watt radios around it? Calibrate it every now and then too.

Could it be the way you are looking at the screen? IE North UP, or Track UP?
