color phase questions

Post by schnell »

I have a question for you more experienced members of the community here,

Would it be possible to get some pictures of the different color phases we see in the bluetick hound's coat?

I am often at a loss for words when describing different dogs, and am also unfamiliar with many of the terms people use to describe dogs when I just read them.

Obviously some of the terms are self descriptive, such as "tricolor" when describing a walker's coat. However, I have trouble describing the subtle differences of individual critters from the same type. I understand terms like blanketback, but how do I describe a pale bluetick vs a dark almost black color phase, or speckled vs mottled, for example?

I guess I'm asking for some example pics that match the descriptions of the description boxes on the UKC registration form. Or could somebody point me to a UKC page that has the illustrations?

Thanks for tolerating my ignorance, but I think I could learn a lot from just a few appropriate pics, so I had to ask.

Here's a pic of what I'm asking about:

and another:

The silver female was the odd one in the bunch. I think she's very special, as she is the most personable and was the heaviest of the litter. She doesn't look like her siblings, or her parents, or her grandparents. Curious.

I have had both in a litter before. The darker pups will be mostly black, in fact they kinda will look more like a black and tan than a bluetick. The lighter one will hold onto the lighter ticking more than the others but will still darken up a lot.
I have noticed the pups that get more of the Cameron traits turn out to be darker.

Cool!

I wondered whether it was some of the Mad river blood from the sire's side, or perhaps Some of the Casey or Bryant's additions from mom's side. I've never seen pictures or examples of either. Except for some of these select outcrossings, each parent was something like 7/8 th from the same Cameron strain.

Bluefloyd, your experience suggests that the silvery color comes from the mother's ancestry. I'll try to focus some effort on learning more about them.

Since we are talking about color schemes, I like to keep the pups that have a black hood with no white on the forehead. I don't do it for any other reason than I like the looks better.
Another thing that interested me is the pups that would have a perfect circle on them, there were always a few that circles looked like they were drew with a compass.
