lion permit in wa
so my buddy has a permit for lions this year . the thing is I got young dogs that have never smelled a lion before they have caught a few bob cat . the one female has caught bob cat on the ground twice . they will roll a bear and are in the best shape they can be in . I lost both of my older dogs that have been on lions last spring and the winter before . I hate laying drags with artifical scents but I did and they showed no intrest . but i was running around the other day and exploded in the box, went another 100 yards and there was a bob cat up on the bank . my wife says i need to have more faith in them they will do fine, just hike a track out like you have done in the past .but if there is any one up here that would like to go that has a dog that has proven them selves on lions . we can have three dog handlers . i under stand that lions are easy to catch I am just wanting to have a dog that has seen one before around .

If your dogs have caught bobcats before, then I wouldn't be too awful worried about pitchin out on a lion track. Leave that "catchin a lion is easy" stuff at the door when you leave though!! A lion DOES leave more scent than a bob, but the hunt is different (so I've experienced) and can be very difficult sometimes but don't worry about the degree of difficulty, just hunt!!! Good luck, you'll do just fine.

Hello
I got drawn for okanogan zone. My dogs have been on bobs and lions. I think you'll do just fine. Shoot me a message. Maybe we could meet up if either of us finds a track! Where are you from?

Cougar hunting should be a slam dunk for you, they are 10 times easier to catch then bobcats.
Re: lion permit in wa
depends on where your running bobcat or lion.
Re: lion permit in wa
lion hunting is fun you should have no problem catchin one if you go with someone who has good dogs and good knowledge of the country and an easy lion depends on what kind of country your in and how dogwise the lion is. over here we have trailed from sun up to sun down and had to come back and put on the track the next day and catch the lion that evening and then the next week we trail for about 500 yards and jump the lion and have him caught all in about 2 hours from the time we unloaded. but this is all dry ground i dont know how much dry ground you can hunt up there

Re: lion permit in wa
hey willis my other buddy got drawn for that okanogan tag this year too. I had it three years ago you should have no trouble getting a cat up there . I ended up getting a small one it jumped my dog on the ground it was my own fault I know better than to just turn one dog loose. there are a three permits I will be hunting on this winter so I geuss if these young dogs dont make it this winter they never will . there wont be any dry ground up here there is a foot right now and we can turn loose in 5 days and counting . I am like a kid waiting on christmas , and I am just a dog handler .

Yea. I agree. I'm the same way. I've been scouting like crazy. I've found quite a few spots to go. Hopefully there's not to much competition in the areas that I've decided to go. You have no idea about hunting pressure until the season actually opens. I am hoping that I can get some nice video and photos before the season is over. I've typically hunted in Colorado so I'm curious what. Is an average size cat is in the okanogan

Average cat in Okanogan is going to be around 115 pounds. That is the hardest hit area in the state. But it holds a ton of cats. We will be in Chelan this weekend, we drew it year before and are heading back again. Only big toms guys. Let's make these hunts work and hopefully we will keep these hunts permanintly. Good luck to everyone.

ya that is the problem with these permits when guys get drawn they run out and shoot the first cat they tree because they have to shoot one. the female quota is good and it needs to be there but guys need to relax and leave the girls up there . I know it is tough to do when you have never got a cat before but i get more exited at looking at good pictures as I do seeing one on the wall, and hopefully next weekend I will be able to post some good ones on here .
Re: lion permit in wa
The last two posts were some of the smartest statement I have hear in a long time! Guys be very selective, only take a large tom. That's the only way of keeping these hunts for the future.

I hate to tell you this but the only way to keep these hunts is to write your state legislators and put pressure on them! This is the last year of theses hunts unless they pass legislation to keep them, and word is that its not a big issue so we will see! The game dept. could care less how the quota is met, either total or female! i know enforcement wants it closed as quick as possible.

Re: lion permit in wa
Im just young and bumb but i found some regs from 4 years back it seems to me that there is more people putting in for the cat tags now then there was then. is there a way that we can try to get more cat tags or are we just stuck with what we got. If the game dep. see's that more people are putting in do u think they might want to give more out just my thoughts. My foreman went up to curlew on the opening weekend of late archery in three days they saw 4 cats. saw a mom and a kitten and two lone cats one of them they had drove around a courner im the morning before it got light it was sitting in the road munching on a little 3x3 he said that cat was fricken huge.
