question On My Hound ?

Hey Guys,

Im New to this site but have been looking at site for a year or so . But i have a question about one of my hounds he is a 7 yr old bluetick an his voice sounds real raspy and an its really quiet. i cant here him very well when he"s trailing or treeing its really odd . its normal for a dog that has been treed for a long time to be kinda hoarsed but this is not the case here. he is healthy and does not seem to have any respiratory problems. so a little advise would be much appreciated .

that is real common for a hound that age to have blown it's voice treeing/baying. I have several older hounds that are in varying stages of looseing their voice. another common cause is rough handling their collar or useing choke chains loungeing on the chain etc.

I had a female lose her voice it wasn't normal for about a year. She was normally pretty lound and one night while hunting she turned really hoarse and she wasn't very loud. Then one night while hunting the next year it was back to normal. I have no idea what happend. But if they can get that way from pulling on their chains and stuff it would make sense. She really calmed down alot in this last year.

I got a bluetick about the same age and same deal as you. He used to have a bawl mouth that would ring your ears. Now that he has gotten older his voice is really deep low and raspy.

some vets will administer a cortizone shot to the vocal cords. i've seen this help for one season might have to do it again next year
