Pegleg, I got into hounds 6 or 7 years ago. My brother in law got me started. I was in my early 20's at the time. I now have two kids that go every chance they get. My boy is turning 9 this year and he's been to one bobcat tree. I still remember his smile like it was yesterday. My daughter went with me two years ago for the first time. She was 3 at the time. It was right around her birthday (Jan 27) and she rode in my pack the whole day. We never treed that day, but it's a day I will never forget. The snow was thigh deep and the sun was out. It was about a 10 mile trip. The funnest thing is she slept the whole way out in my pack. She was snuggled up with her blanket and happy as could be. I was sore! They both take a hound with them to "pet day" every spring at school.
I think back at my childhood and think about all the interests I had and left. The one I couldn't shake was animals. I hope my kids are the same. Animals kept me out of a lot of trouble and jail more than once.
They are also having to learn about losing a dear friend at a young age though. I fear that they may be a little young, but I guess it's the price we have to pay to expose them to the joys of animals at a young age.

pegleg,
i just read some of the stories on here. was trying to think of something that could help some of the youth hunters out. kind of an incentive, prize, or something like that. i got to thinking about some things you need when you first get started, and i came up with a handful or two. one of the only things, besides support and words, that i can contribute is a dog. i would like to get ahold of you, or you can get ahold of me to discuss this. depending on how many puppies my blue dog has, i would be willing to give one to a youth hunter in need. i know that the price of a good bred hound can get up there...so i would give it away if shipping costs can be paid for it. anyways, let me know what you think.

Hey everyone. I'm 16 almost 17. This will be my 3rd season of hunting. I run coon, bear. I got ,y first hound before I ever even hunted with hounds. His name is gunner he was 2 when I bought him. Now he is 4 he's. A walker plott bluetick mix. He's got a nice bawl moth on him. Then I got a 7 month old walker pup that his gunners nephew. Bear huntings my favorite this was my first year. Hunting them. And I can still hear my older dog baying a bear. And walkin in so close and here the bears grunts. We never got that bear. But latter on I got my first bear. And it was the best thing ever. Now for the contest or something you guys were talking about. I think maybe a photo contest. Of us kids out hunting would be cool. And that essay contest. Troubbles I have are I don't hunt with anyone my age. But that's not that big of a deal. The next would be geting gas so I can go up to the mountains. So prize ideas for a contest could be a gas card. Or tracking collars. Or a hunting pack. Just some ideas I had. Another contest could be a bear hunting contest for who trees the most. Or who bays up the most. Just some ideas. Thanks everyone for readin.

hound hunting isnt a sport, its a way of life
