using a cb radio around the garmin astro 220

Post by kenny »

I have read a little about using a cb radio and the motorola radios around the astro 220 and the collars and have read that it is not good for them that it screws them up. But i'm wondering why because they were designed after the garmin rhino that has a radio built into them. When hunting with my friends we take different trucks and the only way to keep in touch is with the cb. I just got the garmin last year and have not been using the cb when I have those collars on But when i'm with my friends I go back to using my Johnson collars and after using the Gps tracking system its like going back to cave man days. So if anyone has any great info or how to find the info out on garmins site please let me know. Thanks kenny

the astro has two different receivers to pick up signals from two different sources - 1.gps satellites and 2.dc20/30/40 dog collar transmitters. communication radio transmissions (cb, marine, etc) are burning out the receiver for the dog collar transmitters. it does not effect the satellite receiver at all. the rhino only has the satellite signal receiver, so the built in marine radio doesn't hurt anything.

Your fine to use a CB.. it's the VHF marine radios that you should worry about.

Your Garmin is around 156mhz

CB is 27Mhz so you are cool to use CB around them.. If your running a Big Linear or big power then you might damage it.. hell with enough power on a CB You could fry just about anything, you'll know power when you key up and you start hearing you voice on come through the radio speakers.. :D .. But a stock CB or even a Slightly modified CB won't do anything to the Garmin.

Marine Radios are a different Game... But at the lower power settings I wouldn't worry about it too much.. again if you start using High Powered VHF.. that's when you start to get into the risk of blowing it up.. VHF(Marine) is right there with the 156Mhz range.. so it's practically identical and is tuned to take in most of the transmitted power which can damage your unit.

I yak on the CB all the time and have my Truck antenna and Magnent mount on all the time without any consideration.

Thanks thats good to know. I will be using my cb with my garmin from now on.The garmin is awsome compared to the telementry collars. Since I started using the garmin it makes my life in the woods so much better, not much guess work any more no more bouncing signal. thanks again Kenny
