I just bought a ton of the black bag Sportdog for a "good" deal @ $21.50 per bag. The High Energy Black Diamond has been costing considerably more. With our eouropean comunist SOB government in charge, we will be paying more for EVERYTHING! When the country is done, the price of dog food will no longer matter.

I'd like to hear from Pegleg on this one.

I get Diamond Lamb and Rice for $30 a bag retail, and they will give a discount of a whole dollar on a pallet! Thats a 40 lb bag.

Was getting High Standard in Utah for $21.50 per bag, but it came to about $28 per bag after going to pick it up.

Of course Nevada prices are just high.

If you are noticing a raise in dog food prices, its most likely because the price of grains, (especially corn) went way up this fall. As always the cost increase is passed onto us, the consumers......

This tip might help some of you dog men out with the cost of dog food.

Check with local Birddog kennels, Hog Farmers, Cattle feed lots
Maybe even other houndsmen, that is if they want to tell you.

Every big city that has a train depot in it receives huge shipments of dog food by rail. Now the folks that do the unloading and cleanup, after the freight cars are unloaded.

There is a huge amount of spillage, busted bags.
Some contractor has this contract to pick it up and can resale it (but not for dog food )
They must sell it for hog or cattle feed. These are the places that I know have this product.

Salt Lake city, Utah
Saramento Ca.

You can also make your own, if you want to spend the time doing it?
Just do a little research on where to buy these items.
Rice, Corn, wheat
Chicken meat meal, Foster farms in southern Ca. just do not get feathers, it is not digestable in dogs
Beef Meal, check out slaughter house
Sheep Meal,

I feed this;
http://www.orijen.ca/orijen/products/6fishdog.aspx
at about $80.00 for a 40lb bag. Expensive? Yup. But one of the best foods out there IMO.

Gotta wonder what kind of quality, and or nutrition is in a bag of food that costs $21.00?? Grain tainted with melamine from China? Corn? Cancerous tumors for protien? Worse?

Also, grains have NO place in dog food, IMO. It would be like us trying to live off sugar, corn, potatoes, sugar beets and other high-glycemic carbs. Can you say diabetes?
Dogs are not physiologically designed to process these carbs. Complex, low starch carbs in proportion to fat and protein, also of high nutritional quality, are the best choice for our mutts, offering vitamins and trace elements that canines do need.

You are either rich or dont have very many dogs. If I tryed to pay that much I would be starving and not be able to drive any where because I couldnt afford gas.

for all you poor guys, like myself, this is what us backwoods white boys do to save money on dog food. first you would get a big steel metal tube or what i use is a half of an old water tank, i put it up on stand dig a hole under it( thats were your fire pit will be). 2nd you would go talk to your butcher and see if you can get all the meat and bone scraps(that includes rib cages and any other part of the animal), after that you would come home and start cooking the whole carcass.(I also use every part of my deer, bear, and yes even some of the bobs i get.) just cook it in the big tube feed it to your dogs. the only time you feed them dog food is maybe every other day to only 3 times a week. i have no cost out on any of the carcasses, and only spend $18.00 a week on a 44lb bag of old roy which can last for 5 day now compared to it only lasting me 2 days before. this is based off of feeding 15 dogs every day. thats what we do out here in the backwoods.

Orijen is Very good food, but very expensive. I use it also, but only have 1 dog. If I had more dogs I coundn't feed it. The same company also makes Acana which is cheaper but still very good quality. The digestive track of dogs is too short to really break down and utilize grains. Plus cooked meat starts to lose its nutritional value for dogs. A dog with a healthy immune system will not be prone to problems from E. coli and salmonella issues asocciated with raw meat. When's the last time you saw a dog chowing down in a corn field with a cooked steak! Just saying.... Dogs can live off most anything, they were scavengers at one time. Just doesn't mean they are at their best. Happy New Years to everyone on here! :beer
