I believe alot of it has to do with them having wolf dna. There are many different wolf color phases. They are like a dog. Many diff. colors.
Are there many different color phases in other parts of the country?
Do you guys think its Wolf? or dog. KC i know your hunting in country thats puts out big coyotes every year 40 plus and some 50s I myself being that part of the country think its dog blood. There was a study done recently that I read that they did allot of DNA testing on coyotes across the country but I cant recall what it said enough to post it here. Nice coyote mounts you got there btw-
We have pretty much all straight up coyotes here. There is a little variation in the color, but nothing like these pictures shows. Around here it's pretty much just a variation in the shade of gray.
When I was a kid me and my dad ran a bitch coyote in a hole in the month of January. We got her out, took her home and put her in a pen. The hounds didn't pay her any attention around there. Then along about the middle of Feb. one of our running Walker males started hanging around the pen she was in. A few days later she was backing up to the fence so we put the Walker in with her and they was hung up later that day. She had 6 long haired tricolored puppies. We kept a couple of them and gave the rest away. They acted like full blood coyotes do that you raise. Never did really gentle down good. Could not keep them out of the chickens so they didn't last long around mama. She shot them both.
