Will a finished coon dog make a lion dog?
Will a finished coon dog make a lion dog?
I just got a 3 yr old male Jeff Allen bred dog that he sold as a pup to a coon hunter back in the midwest. He is suppose to be a finished coon dog but the guy had circumstances that he couldnt keep the dog. So to cut the story short.....I now have him and am hoping he will make a lion dog? Lets have your input.

The only way to find out is put him on a track. I would say treat him like a pup at first and progress as he wants to. If he wants to run it let him. Every dog is different for one guy on here his finished coon dog might not have but the next guy might have a nice lion dog that was a finished coon dog before he ever saw a cat. JMO

Every lion dog I've ever trained started on coon. given the fact that he is out of jeffs stuff is gona make him chase cats that much more. good luck and let us know how it goes.
"Houndn'Ems Blueticks" if it smells like a cat, they'll catch it.

My first dog was a Berton Owney bred English. He was hunted on nothing but coon the first couple years. Then started on Bear and Lion. Was awsome on both. On the flip side I have taken bear dogs and turned them into Ok coon dogs but they always preferred bear more.
