I wes considering it several years ago - had a family that would put me up, help me get my dogs accross the border, the whole works. Before I went, I decided to talk to a couple of friends that had gone years earlier, and after those visits, I decided to stay north.

Along with everything else that can happen in Mexico, if the host family decides that they want your dogs, they can just keep them and excuse you from their property. If you object, they have the option of calling the authorities and telling them anything they desire about your obvious law breaking habits.

Mexico has game laws just like anywhere else. Just because the ranchers don't follow them, doesn't mean that an outsider would have the law, or the locals on their side. Mexico has rules about how many dogs, and especially hunting dogs, can be taken into the country at once. If you are found out, or turned in, you are automaticly guilty of breaking that / those rules, no matter who helped you, or how you pulled it off!

Even with the promise of hunting virtually un hunted game and terrain, in my opinion, it's not worth it. And I'm a risk taker.

I'm interested to hear from others as well.

A few years ago it was really good in Mexico and I have been invited to go back several times this year.
The problem with Mexico now is the drug gangs and its not safe to go especially by the border.

My wife is from Mexico. Jalisco which is way deep. She would like to go back to visit her relatives but me being from a law enforcement back ground I say absolutely not. I have to many friends who have gone back and ran into problems with not only the bad guys but the police as well. If they stop you, you had better have money. One of my buddies been a cop for over 20 yrs went back with his family. Not to far passed the border they got stopped by the police. While 6 cops stood by with automatic weapons pointed at him they held his wife and felt her up until he gave them money. Its even worse now with the drug cartels. A minister who is working in Mexico just stopped by our church a few months ago to visit. The stories he told us just that he had seen happen in the last year would make you not want to go near the place.

Ok, sounds like you have to have a place all hooked up and under control to be safe. Anyone out there know of a big ranch that is hound friendly?

Going to Mexico is like rolling dice, snake eyes are going to come up sooner or later. I have been and i have a friend that goes every year with his hounds. I have an open invite and about 10 ranches to hunt but i aint going back until things get better there. Like Benny said Mexico has some weird laws. Most of the time the mexican dont care about the laws but when it comes to a white folk and they see a chance to get some money watch out. The good lion hunting places are all in the heart of the drug running areas, there is no such thing as a safe ranch or place in Mexico.

If you arnt versed in spanish or go with someone who is, DO NOT GO!!!

I spent 17 seasons hunting in Old Mexico and had some of the most incrediable experiences ever.
I was fortuniate enough to jaguar back when there were legal hunts in the early 80's
The last year I was there I realize it was time to quite.
I wasn't real partial to havin a automatic weapon stuffed in my face because the outfitter we had our permits with was involved in some real shady dealings and was not paying the people he was leasing the hunting rights from, SO..... you have more to worry about than the drug dealers, the Seri Indians and others are just as bad in many cases!!!!
I would go back ..HOWEVER I would be very carefull of the area and the outfitter I was with...

Wow sounds like a pain in the a**. I don't bend really well when pushed. I had an issue with a marlin down there already so I get the fraud and threat things. Even if everything is set up straight they see gringo and want some money. The price goes up or they find something you're doing "wrong" and you need to pay. And, good a chance as any that the guy you set it all up with set you up. I get it.

According to my father in law it can be pretty bad their to if they think you have money. Not from the drug cartels but the locals. It is a poor country and the American dollar goes along way. He built a place in a gated community. He still gets broken into alot because they know he has money. Oh and his money? Just a few thousand american dollars a month from his retirement and a little bit he managed to save up.

Hi,

Actually in Guadalajara things are a little hot, but just stay in the Tourist area and avoid going at night to areas unknown, travel by day, I don´t think you would have a problem, one because your wife is Mexican, and she is from there, so if you get stopped I am pertty sure she would get the cops to stop and send them back, or get her to driving, because right now if the cops give problems to the people coming from the states to visit their families, they are advised to leave them alone! and on your way down here just look any sign that says PAISANO, there is a phone number that you can contact and they will listen and help you out well actually your wife would be the indicated one to do the phone call.
Best bet is to travel to El Paso, Tx, get an early travel to Torreon, and stay there, that´s about 9 to 10 hrs drive(remember travel only on day), the toll way there is usually well guarded by the military, so it´s safe to travel that road., then next day travel from Torreon to Guadalajara, it´s 8 or 9 hrs. drive, but it´s a good road, and travel through the toll highways when possible, it´s safer, From Torreon to Cuencame it´s about 110km, it´s toll highway, then from Cuencame to Rio Grande, it´s about 150 to 170km that is two way highway not toll, then at Rio Grande is a two lane high way, all the way to Guadalajara, but toll from Fresnillo to Guadalajara.
Hope this helps you out, please don´t hessitate to contact me for any help adrianrdzg@yahoo.com.mx, in Mexico there are lot´s of very honest people, yes we are having a very hard time with the Drugs Gangs, but it´s not as bad as every one says and I live at one of the cities that have a big Problem. Yes some one in the goverment can tell you really bad things about the drug cartels, there is a war between them, but is the same in US, Mexico, Central America and South, just right now the problem is the war between them, but just drive at day, dont´s go to bad bars, go to your hotel bar, or dont go to night clubs please!
