what's the youngest dogs you ever treed a lion with?

Post by guy54 »

Last wednesday a neighboring ranch called and said they had a lion track. Two days before that my old dog got hit on the highway and killed. I told the neighbor that all I had for dog power was two pups. A six month old male B/T pup and a seven month old female B/T pup. I went over and saw that it appered to be a male lion track. At first the pups didn't want much to do with the track. We started walking it out and soon the pups got excited and opened. They didn't go far when they jumped the lion out in the rocks. They bayed him up in the rocks once and he bailed. They ran him again and this time they put him up a small pine tree that was growing horizontally out of the side of a canyon. I thought the pups did awsome for their first lion and not having an old dog to show them. This got me to wondering what is the youngest dogs you have treed a lion with? I would love to hear your stories. These are the youngest I have caught a lion with.

Sounds to me like you have a pair of really nice pups. I don`t think you will find many pups much younger than that. Bay a lion on the ground then gave chase, put him up a tree.

Fine Breeding, keep them safe.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your older dog. Your pups brother was the same age when he treed his first one. Hope you are enjoying your holidays.

That's the age I usually start trying to send my pups out on their own. I haven't been able to do it much younger, but I'm always pushing the envelope on it. The thing I have found about a pair of 6 month old pups that will trail and tree their own is that if you keep puttin them on alot of their own tracks and trees after that, you have the same kind of dog at 1 1/2 -2 that alot of people wait 4-5 years to have. I have been highly critisized by my buddies and people on this site for starting my pups so young but my 6 month old have usually followed my big dogs to the tree for about 3 months when they hit 6 mo. old. I think you've got a pair of potentially solid gold dogs right there, keep it up and congrats!

I'm with houndnem on this one. I don't hunt conditions that would warrant pups that age "doing it on their own", but my pups start going with the older dogs between 5 and 6 months old. At that age, you can sometimes tell a lot about their drive and determination to get hold of a lion.

My most recent pup I picked up was treeing on bears at 4 weeks of the fetus stage.
All 4 were booger barking inside

No but seriously 6 months seems right to me and thats what I have done.

Thank you everyone for the encouragement. I couldn't be happier with these pups and for now they are going to have to keep doing it on their own since they are the only two I have. But that may be a good thing for the pups. They are really working well together as team.

I've had pups 3 1/2 and 4 months old strike trail and tree coons but the youngest on a lion was 9mos old she split off from dogs 4 in fact that were running the back track and treed a 130 lb Tom and held the tree until the 4 got back,5 years later I had her son at 10 mos breakoff from mom and others that were running a fox and tree one and hold it for 2hrs all alone until the fox was treed once it got quite I heard cotton high on the ridge treed, that was a good hunt..frank PS when the mom treed the big Tom my hunting buddy told me to go get my pup and bring her on down to the Lion tree  guess who got the last laugh it was his 4 dogs on the backtrack.
