MY DOG BROKE a RIB
MY DOG BROKE a RIB
HEy guys, My dog fell out af a leaner and broke her second to last rib. It is broke completely off about 3 inches from her back bone, you can feel the break. The rest of the rib is slightly pushed in from the rest if you feel down her rib cage. It doesn't seem to bother her at all. We treed the cat early and a brought her home before going to run another one, and she sure was pissed at me. I am a long ways from a vet and was planning on taking her in this afternoon, but was wondering if anyone had had this happen before, and if there was anything the vet could do for a broken rib? She is an awesome bear and cat dog. Thanks for your input.

If I was you I would bring her in just to be safe. Cuz a buddy of mine had a hound die from a punctured lung awhile back. And you never no.

hound hunting isnt a sport, its a way of life

Unless it poked a lung, a vet will usually just leave it heal by itself, which takes a couple months of not running the dog, very rarely they will take them out, if anything they will pin or wire it, most will let it heal naturally

Re: MY DOG BROKE a RIB
My youngest did the same, he fell about 15' with the lion landing on top of him. It healed up ok but it was not totaly broken off more like a crack. He has a lump on that rib now. I didn't take him in to the vet cause I am poor and he didn't seem to be in any pain... just tried to get him to lay up for a few days. I was hoping it would teach him not to climb, no such luck
If the ends are not touching you might try to keep it in place with some wrap like they do for humans that break a rib. Might be better to go to the vet if the ends are not touching.

Re: MY DOG BROKE a RIB
Ive had several dogs with broken ribs one that is broke that far back is pretty safe as far as a punctured lung. You can take them to a vet and they will wire that rib to a solid one so it will heal quicker but if you lay her up a couple weeks it will heal up fine on its own

Hey thanks guys, She is still here in the house and you cant see any swelling, and no pain. Either way she won't be hunting cats this year.

Re: MY DOG BROKE a RIB
If its broke RIGHT off I would go to the vet.
If there is a sharp shard of rib in there it might puncture her lung, gut bag, list is endless really and that'll be it. Whats an xray, $80 ? There's your answer if its a good dog.
