Trashiness?
What are some of your sure fire ways of breaking, without using your sure fire? I had a young dog catch a coyote three weeks ago. I would rather see a nice buck or elk! The good ol trustee collar has been thrown on her at every fresh coyote I see. Now she seems timid. Breaking scent on the chain or what?

Re: Trashiness?
I would think that the collar will work just fine. I understand not wanting to run trash, but don't beome obsessed with it. If your dog has any smarts at all, she will figure out not to run coyotes without abusing the e-collar. I wouldn't use it at all until she opens on a trash track. If she gets into trouble every time she smells something to find out what it is, she probably won't want to check any track and will be scared to be around you or the collar. It's not her fault that a coyote happened to walk by where you want to hunt at. If she tries to chase it, then that's her fault. Since she's young she just has to find out exactly what you want her to do. At a young age dogs are easy to ruin by getting carried away with "trashbreaking". Go easy on her, it sounds like she is just experimenting. If she's smart enough to become timid, she's definately smart enough to figure out what's trash and what's not.

I agree with you Scott, good advice there. E-collars are worth there weight in gold when used right, BUT will be your worst nightmare when abused and not used properly.
Also, if you are just driving down the road and dumping your pup on fresh coyote sign, then hitting her with the e-collar, you will cause yourself the types of problems you are starting to see very quickly.
Dogs key into your body language and mental status changes ( excitement level ) very quickly. One thing your dog knows now for sure is when you stop, come back and excitedly throw him out of the dog box, if he leaves your side bad things are going to happen to him.
If you have not properly conditioned your dog to the E- collar, it sounds to me like the days of using an e-collar on that dog are over with for good, as you now have a collar shy dog.

Re: Trashiness?
Trash breaking ahh gotta love it . What i do is if and when i see a deer coyote any ohter trash i dont wanna run. I will throw a hat or something out the window where i saw it cross. Go up the road a mile or so and road the dog through dont act any different than a regular day of hunting wait for the dog to fully commit to the track and open and get out a couple hudred yards and light it up for a few seconds note your still roading driving real slow for the time being and dont act any different you dont want the dog to relate you with the bad experience of chasing trash works for me good luck couple times with this and you should be a ok. Good luck and keep us posted. leave tho collar on her all the time it doesnt have to be turned on just on her. so she doesnt just get the collar when she gets in trouble she needs to have a collar on and have some good experiences. good luck

You'll probably never get it broke off coyotes now that it's caught one, might as well give up on the young dog and sell the trash running thing to me.

Re: Trashiness?
Thanks dcdoggin. You know what happens is I get to anxious to get to that cat track that I don't like takin the time to do what's right. In the past I've taken the youngsters out when most of the snow is melted, but I can still decipher a fresh trash track and correct them as needed on trash. And I know a guy who was known for ruining good young dogs with E collars. But. This cat season I brought my own pack out. Meaning from ground up, no more old lead dog. Call me crazy as everyone has but these young dogs have caught me 16 lions and 7 bobbers to date since nov. 17th. My best year yet! This little dog is first treed on every lion(8) I've put her on according to the garmin, and flat runs down a bear and puts em up. Best feet, best endurance, some brains(no vet bill at least), the kind of things I like this pup possesses. Except a mouth. Fact of the matter I hate to not give her a better chance. I wish I could do magic! Is there any overnight cure you guys know of? I can't wait!

First show her what you want her to see so its clear in her mind (or at least should be) whats expected of her and then really work her over on the "bad" stuff.

Re: Trashiness?
Dont give up on her. Like DCDOGGIN said keep the collar on her so she doesnt know any different. Tri Tronics dummy collars are about 20-25 bucks. Saves your real collar from getting banged up round the house. I have 2 dummy collars and switch them around when I am doing chores and feeding. Take one off of a dog and trade it for the dummy collar on another dog. Then when I go hunting they dont pay any attention to changing the dummy out for the real thing. Any dog that can catch a coyote by themselves is worth keeping.

Re: Trashiness?
I tell ya what I have never had any luck with just going out and trying to break dogs off game. Not a dog that had any brains to start with. It's a lot easier to just pour them on the good game. From the very first time the pup is hunted, if it's put on good game, with good older dogs, and praised, you just did 80% of your trash breaking. But I also don't believe that a dog should ever be allowed, or tryed to be made to run something you want it broke off. Never. I don't care how young, I don't care how much or little game its seen. It's not okay to run rabbits, possum, skunk, or deer. That just opens the window to more unwanted trash in the future. I pretty much want my dogs oblivious to any animal in the woods besides a bear or coon. I don't ever want them thinking just because it's an animal they need to trail it, I don't care if its new to them or not. I want them to pass on by in a hurry hunting for the good game. Setting them up for success is whole lot easier than trying to make a dog fail.
Also I notice a lot of people that swear they have an pup thats just "naturally trashy" are hunting it with dogs that aren't as broke as they say they are. They are just a whole lot wiser than the pup, and most likely e-collar wise.
