If its a fresh track, and he is barking on it, and barking as he is going, that is what he is supposed to do.

Did you let him go on the track, or did you hold him on the leash while he barked at the track. If he is barking on the track, let him go to catch it!

When it comes to barking, every dog is different. Some bark a million barks a minute and some don't say a thing until their treed. I like a dog that only barks once and a while on a track and then lets all hell loose at the tree. some of mine will not bark until I let them go and they smell 5 or ten tracks so I personally wouldn't sweat it as long as it makes the tree and is barking there. my theory is that the garmin will tell me where they are and silent dogs make short races. cat don't hear a thing until it's too late.

You will get to know your dog. You will learn how fresh the track is by how much he opens. I to like a quiet track style dog for the same reason as houndem. It also does not ring the dinner bell for the wolves.

If the dog is leashed when introduced to the track and the dog recognizes the scent as good, he/she should open in my opinion weather it is hot or cold. It's called "striking" and is similar to a dog striking off the box. The dog is just telling you "let me go, let me go" and even tight mouth dogs will do this. Once you let the dog go, depending on his/her style and the tracking conditions he/she may leave out of there quiet or screaming. More time out with the dog and more tracks will better familiarize you with your dog and his habits.

Ya your right about confusing lol. Why was he barking if it's not fresh? you dont think he smelt it? If the dog is barking he most likely smelt the track and wanted to go.

I don't suppose that it is a bad thing that the dog was barking at an old lion track, I used to have an old walker female that would try and run 3 day old cat tracks by sight in the snow, she would bark and i know she couldn't smell it.
