Lost Hounds With collars removed
A week ago yesterday a freind of mine lost two dogs. One showed up about 20 miles away yesterday with out its tracking collar on. The other dog is still missing but I think I had a signal on it SAturday close to were he turned out. Anyway this is the second dog in that area to have its tracking equiptment removed. The other was a few weeks ago on another guys dog. Have any of you had people steal your tracking equiptment before? Im not sure if its another hunter, an antihunter, or just an a$$hole but you can bet if I find out its another houndsman I'll hurt him badly. This happened near Woodland Park Colorado.

Re: Lost Hounds With collars removed
I have heard of it happening before to a buddy of mine. But this was in ignorant enviromentalist california, A lot of city folk think they are some sort of shock collar that is hurting the dog and take them off. If i were you i would call the pounds all around the area.

Hey bud sorry nothing to say about collars. yet if you lose a dog and you have to leave hang your shirt or jacket on a tree or bush or a kennel of theres that they know and the dog will almost always be there in the morning. I have lost a couple of dogs before and I just leave my jacket something that smells like me and I find them laying on my stuff that I left. Just for future it can work and it can not.
Sorry about the collar hope you can catch and STRAIGHTEN someone out!!!!!

Had this happen to buddy quite a few years ago. Lost signal on the dog and as we headed back into town, his box started beeping. We narrowed it down to a small neighborhood and the second door he knocked on a lady answered. Hanging on the coat rack behind her was his tracking collar, and the dog was in the garage. She said she had intended to call the number on the collar, but hadn't gotten around to it yet.

Re: Lost Hounds With collars removed
I've heard of it happening both ways with tracking equipment taken or the collars left and the dogs taken. If it's the same area just keep checking your numbers and when you beep them up beat the hell out of whoevers got them. I know a guy who was tracking his dog and all of the suddden the dog was gone. He kept on the same direction of the signal and past another hound guy who didn't stop. As the guy went by he see's his dog in the box. So he ran the guy down and sure enough his dog was in his box and the tracking collar was in the cab with a magnet in it. The guy claimed he was going to call when he got home.

THE PROBLEM IS PEOPLE ARE EITHER TO DAM JEALOUS OR JUST PLAIN IGNORANT. I EVEN TELL MY BUDDIES, DO NOT PICK UP MY DOGS UNLESS I TELL YOU TO! IM NOT TO FAR BEHIND. I HAD AN INCIDENT WHERE AN AQUAINTED HOUNDSMAN HUNTED BEHIND ME A COUPLE OF HOURS LATER AND DUMPED HIS BEST DOG ON A BOBBER. ABOUT TWO HOURS LATER HE REACHED PROXIMTY OF THE DOG. BUT THERE WAS ALSO A PICK UP DOWN BELOW. HIS SIGNAL ON THE TELEMETRY BEGAN TO WEAKEN AS HE CALLED ON THE DOG. HE IMMEDIATEY JUMPED IN HIS TRUCK TO CATCH UP TO THE PICK UP. HE HAD A STRONG SIGNAL. TRYING TO CATCH UP, HE TOOK ANOTHER READING, NOW A WEAK SIGNAL. PUZZLED HE TURN HIS YAGI AROUND A GOT A STRONG SIGNAL, TURNED AROUND AND FOUND THAT THE COLLAR HAD BEEN TOOSED IN A BAR DITCH. DOG WAS STOLEN! WE ALL WORKED TOGETHER AND PUT THE WORD OUT. HE RECOVERED THE DOG 3 DAYS LATER..... SO THE POINT IM TRYING TO MAKE IS SPREAD THE WORD, AND BE FAMILIAR WITH WHOSE IN THE AREA AND YOUR SURROUNDINGS!!!! GOOD LUCK FINDING THE DOG. NEVER GIVE UP, SOMEONE WILL RUN THEIR MOUTHS AND THE TRUTH SHALL BE REVEALED!

Here is a helpful idea. I put a spring loaded clip to connect collars. So if the dog get hung-up and tracking collar comes off their is a good probability it will stay with the dog. See pic.

Re: Lost Hounds With collars removed
The second hound showed up today a few miles from his house half way between his house and were he turned out 10 days ago. This hound still had its tracking collar on. I would sure like to know what his dogs were doing and how they ended up seperated by about 20 miles. Im just glad they are home.
Re: Lost Hounds With collars removed
Its a felony to interfere with hunting dogs in NM, but not many folks know that.

Hey DH, I like that! I've had the collar come off before, but it was easy to find
I've also found my dog chained up in someone's camp, (before I had a telemetry)so I could see both things happening: stealing and losing.
Hope you find the dog.
Not to hijack, but it sure sounds like there's alot of incidents in NM, CO, ID, and of course CA. Maybe here in OR too, but when I'm out (which ain't alot), i usually don't see anybody, let alone another houndsman.
Remember: alcohol won't solve your problems....but neither does milk.
