Bearkiller
I'll tell you, if I can get these two GSP's to go on Bear thats all they'll ever run. They wont be birddogs they'll be exclusivley hunted on Bear and bobcats. They'll be bear dogs.
Now that said GSP's werent bred to be just a birddog. We in America have more or less hunted them on only birds, GSP were bred to be a versatile dog. I myself have only ran mine on birds, but I do plan on working these two boys into the mix on bears and see what happens.
Anyone ever use German Shorthair Pointers on Bear ?

They would not cold trail nearly as well as a hound. They would hunt like a lot of cur dogs do by winding. (quartering back and forth and scenting, that is how they hunt birds) I think the ones that have lots of prey drive would get themselves killed. I had to dive into a sink hole two weeks ago and pull my male from under a coon that was drowning him (not good when your dog tries to bite into a coon while he is swimming in 5 ft of water). I would agree with the boys on sticking to hounds, if most of your chases start with a cold track a hard charging biggame hound is the way to go.

all the german pointers were originally used like cur dogs on big game including brown bear & cat.
lot of bird/bull mixes used on pigs. seen some cold trail but they had been running for a few years before they did.
almost all dogs will sight tree & since they generally run silent a better chance they will sight tree.

My hunting partner has a german wire hair pointer that loves it all. He has treed bear in the back yard and does tree on them. He sure is gritty on coons as he as cought and stretched them in seconds by himself.
