Pictures of some good old southern utah lion hunters

Post by hunt14 »

Here is a link to a blogg from a guy by the name of Brent Prince. He gave me permission and was happy that I wanted to post his link here on this sight where his dads old pictures would be appreciated. Pictures of Darce Prince, Jim Worthen, Verl Kelsey, Charlie Leeder, even a few of Willis Butolph. Some old pictures of lions and dogs and the men who enjoyed it. Brent said his dad's dogs and Jim Worthens dogs were mostly the same and then Jim got some papered red dogs that he had until he died. He said his dad Darce got some dogs from Milt Holt and Willis Butolph and they were good ones he said. Brent said that his dad always said that good bloodlines are all fine and good but worry more about the time you spend with them than their bloodlines. He said there werent many days that went by that his dad didnt spend some time with the dogs. Look around a little their are more pictures and stories than just the lion hunting 101. Enjoy!

that was way neat! I don't think there are very many people in southrn utah that haven't had their lifes touched in some way by brent prince. I have hunted lions up old commanche trail and stayed up at that neat cabin up on top. there aint nothin easy about huntin lions up there and these fellars didn't have the fancy gagets we have today. I keep some of my dogs in new harmony at kenny jones house. he takes his hounds and ponies up there a couple times a week. something in that rugged canyon keeps us coming back for more. thanks alot for posting that.

I too enjoyed it. That picture of Karen was a while back! I'll have to get her to look at the blog.

Devin I have never talked to Jim's son, does he still hunt lions?

I don't know how many of you took the time to read, but the story's are just as good as the pictures. I found it interesting that Jim and Darce have burial plots next to each other. Sounds like they were pretty good ol friends. It also said that the horse that Jim was riding (which had to have been a pretty young one) when he died is still grazing there in the pastures of New Harmony.

It doesn't sit real well with me when you see how close of friends these men were with each other and with there horses, mules, and dogs and we as hunters share many of the same experiences and relationships with our animals and then you see an ad or an attack on us and our sport by them crazy bastardly people who think they have the animals best interests at heart. pisses me off! anyhow take the time to read the stories they are real good too.

I spent a couple weeks with Jim hunting lions above his house in Hew Harmony. He was a super good guy and we spent a lot of time looking at photo albums and he told some good stories about the old days.

I had given him a finley river bred walker puo and I was picking up a red pup from him in exchange. He loved his red dogs at that time.

They don't make them like him anymore
