"Houndn'em Bluetics"tom caught! more ammature repelling!

Post by houndnem »

well, I never thought after that rock climbing shananigan last week that I would be right back at it 7 days later. I wasn't even going to hunt this week,it's been 3 weeks since the last storm, busy with work and familly, a little burned out, etc. but by the end of the weekend me and the dogs was gettin the itch. good freind and crazy ba$tard, kenny jones met me at the gas station at 6 and it was on. the good part about no snow is you can leave at six and not have to worry about others beating you there. first road we went down we cut a track that had been made in the mud when it was soft and then froze. no snow in sight we didn't think we had a prayer in hell of catching this tom. surprisingly the dogs took it well and before long we lost them on the garmin. hiking in, kenny and I split up. I had a treed reading on the gps but usually that don't mean anything. about 2 hrs later I ran into kenny freaking out about how they had the cat treed and it knocked some dogs off the cliff and got away! dogs were o.k. luckilly, and about the time he was telling the story I heard thunder and dixie blowing up the canyon headed to the only hill with a little patchy snow on the whole mountain. bandit, dora, hook , and the pups were hot on their heels and pretty soon we heard all hell break loose! the cat had made it off a couple hundred feet of cliff and the dogs were barking and trying to get down. there was a frozen waterfall on the edge slicker than snot! the first couple dogs fell off and slid at the bottom like a slippery slide! soon after that the rest of my suicidal pack was down to the big pondy where the cat was safely setting. next thing I know kenny has the ropes out and is half way down the cliff face! of course I followed like a dumb sheep. well we had our fun and took some pics and then tried to figure out how to get the dogs out. I made the climb to the top and tied every rope we had together and lowered it down to kenny. one at a time we pulled those dogs up to the top. I think I'm done runnin down here for a while, but ya never know I said that last week too. enjoy the pics, Jared.

p.s. thought about getting some harnesses and real gear, but I wonder what kind of mess that would get me into. maybe I need to throw the ropes away and start hunting back where cats just tree and you hike to them.

What the hell is all this rope crap?? Don't ya know, real hound doggers string together every dog collar, leash, wire, and snowmobile belt they can muster to do their rappelling. You probably pack a flashlight to retrieve your dogs from caves and abandon mines too! Geez, what is this younger generation of hound doggers coming to??

Nah, that is some rough country to be running dogs in. I much prefer the limestone ledges of northern Utah, at least we have some foot holds!

Jared nice pics. Your pictures and stories make me home sick to be down there hunting. I haven't been able to this year so far, but have a couple hunters lined up for next month. I am excited to stand on those cliffs again.

Houndem, I agree you are nuts, but someone has to post up these type of stories to make guys like me realize what a fellow can run into now and again, I hunt very similiar country on the swell, and you actually have me considering taking a rappeling class and looking at some gear, havent needed it yet but the country calls for it. one of these days when I least expect it I will get myself into a pickle, Great stories and pics Ken

update. I don't know if it was the fall off the ice waterfall or the cliff the cat knocked her off, but my lead dog came up with her guts all ruptured! I watched it for a while and it started getting worse. normally I would let nature take its coarse, but she's my familly pet and pretty much my best freind. took her to the vet and they had to do surgery! the guts had started attatching themseves to one of her tits from the inside. vet said she may well have died pretty soon! I'm glad this dog does common dog tricks, cause I discovered it when I told her to roll over. not a bad idea to pet their belly now and again I guess. even if it did cost me $585.00!!!!!   oh and the worst part, she has to wear a cone on her head and live in my garage, and she's out for 14 days min    .

585 sounds cheap for that. just saying you got a decent vet.
