creative telemetry use

Post by david »

I saw coops post on planting a colar in the car of a cheating wife, and it made me think of this other use for them too:
If you are a baiter, you can weld a small peice of wire on your magnets. attach the collar to a tree limb, and run a peice of fishing line from the magnet wire to a large rock laid on top of the bait. Go back to camp and sleep or what ever with your box turned on and tuned in to that collar. When it starts beeping, that is your alarm. Get up and go practice rigging or run him or whatever your goal is. For me, it would be to break them trashy dogs off bear.

Obviously, you could do it with several baits, but would just have to check each channel every so often, unless your unit has a scanner.

Some people also rig up their live traps with telemetry, so as soon as they get in range, they can just check the channel to see if the trap door has closed.

Your idea works very well, tried it before and it worked good. Not on baits but game trails here at the house.

Yes it works, but a word of caution. Check your local game laws to make sure it is not against the law. Some states consider it "illegal use of tracking equipment." May sound like BS but believe me it isn't, my state is one of them.

yea that is how i check my coyote traps but i just tie the string straight to the magnet. it works really well cause you have to keep as much sent out of the area, where your trap is, as possible. so all i do when i get home to check it is flip on the tracking box. hehe.
dont be afraid to fight for what you believe is right.

used this method in Maine on baits several years ago. We had alot of problems with coons pulling the magnets so we took a 1 gallon bucket with bait and suspended it beside the main bait with light fishing line. This way you can determine the size of the bear that you want to be able to pull the bucket down and activate the collar by adjusting the hieght.

I used them while guiding deer hunters in big pieces of woods. Guys would want to follow a good track in the snow. They never seemed to worry about getting lost in strange country but it sure worried me to have a hunter I couldnt find !! I would put the collar in a sealed plastic bag in their packs and turn them loose on a big buck track. It was a great feeling always knowing where the hunters were. I told them if they did get lost to just stay put and take the collar out of the bag, hang it on a limb beside them, and wait for me to come get them !!
