Navajo Rez Hunt

Post by BearTrack »

Hello Newbie here I am looking for some help to catch a few lions here on the Navajo Rez. We are getting very good snow right now and have been trying hard this year to get a cat. My buddy and I both have tags . I have been out a dozen times this year and have not turned up one cat. I have 2 two year old black and tan bluetick crosses and they can run a drag fine but I'v had trouble getting them to take a decent lion track, and man have I found some big tom tracks. If anybody has any info that might help me make my hounds better or even want to come down and get your dogs on some nice chases just let me know we have a ton of cats down here and a bunch of bear.

Where are you at in new mexico? I'm not far from there, and would love to come run some cats. Our conditions are horrible right now. Let me know.

Here is my opinion....and it's only that. How wet ya runnin your Drags. maybe a real track isn't strong enough. Maybe weaken them drags so they really gotta work for it!!

Hey Thanks guys for the PM's and the info/ tips. I will give them all a try . The temp didn't top out over 5 here in Gallup and going to get lower tonight and we got three inches here at the house and more up in the hills. I can't wait to get out again . The season runs till the end of March so hopefully I can get it done. If nothing else its more learning time for my hounds and I. Yeah I have been running my drags pretty wet starting from the tree to where I want them to start. I will thin it out and contiue to walk them out till they want to go on it .

I am willing to bet he is Navajo. If you are from Gallup it is a 80 pecent chance you are part of the great Navajo tribe. My wife is from Grants. I used to hunt the Navajo for deer every year up around lukachukia. ( I probably spelled that wrong). We saw bear and one mountain lion. And some of the damned biggest mule deer bucks in Arizona. My adopted uncle is Navajo and got permission from tribal councel to take two of his white brothers into areas we are not allowed to hunt. Love that area.

Yeah we have some pretty big deer over here and some big bear and a lot of lions . But as far as hanging or scalping you , not on your first offence . It's more attainable than you think .

If you get snow, don't know if you do, then walk that track out until you jump the lion. After that, the dogs should get it.
