Post by big saint »

I am going to be trialing a 3yr old that is uchtman/hammer bread... I have always had grade dogs and was curious to see what people thought of these lines, and of the cross. Any input is appriciated. Thanks

Those are good lines for coons. What game are you after? Hope your dog pans out.

I have an eight year old female with those bloodlines and she does great on cats, I was told she does real good on coons also but where I live there are not too many of them around.

Uchtmann and Hammer are a couple well respected names in the bluetick breed.Dave Dean, founder of the the Hammer dogs is legendary in my book.Dogs out of those lines can excel no matter what game you want to chase.Anyone who tells you they aren't good for anything but coons hasn't hunted behind many blue dogs!

Hammer Bred, owned by Mike Richie. I hunted with Mike and these dogs impressed me.
They treed eight lions and one bobcat in two weeks of hunting.

Those 2 line are wide and diverse. They were both started between 40 and 50 years ago and you can find many different variations within each line and when you mix them you get even more variation. In any case it is hard to say what your dog's potential is without seeing its papers and the parents in the woods. I like both lines as a whole and have caught big and small game with both for a long time. I just did an Uchtman/Hammer cross 6 mo. ago and I think it could be one of the best I've ever seen. Good Luck.

Wasn't trying to say blue dogs are only good for coon. Was just saying that those lines were proven for coon. Of course it is a fact that you can take blue dogs and selectively breed for traits fitting a chase of any species.

I would say the majority of big game hounds are rooted in coon soil. Good breeding practices can propagate dogs that do it all.

Looks like a lot of good potential to make a nice dog. The Hammer blood on the bottom should make an early starting, game crazy, treeing machine. The top side I'm not familiar with, but if they go back to Hawk and Ranger, that's good. The Smiley's Bl. Angel may be a descendant of Smiley's Bl. Rambo II, a great dog and a producer of some cold nosed dogs. I'd be suprized if your dog doesn't have what it takes, but not all dogs of great blood make it and even with great blood and talent, training is what makes good dogs. Good luck to ya.
