New pup lost the cat

Post by Eagle Nest »

I had a cat run in front of me today about twenty yards away and the pup got a good look at it. By the time I got the collar on it had a 2 minute jump on us and after about 4 miles acording to the garmin the cat had give us the slip. I am wondering if a person should of done anything different she was on it the whole way because every time I would cut her track there were fresh cat tracks there to. Should a cat that close go up quicker than 4 miles this isn,t as easy as most would want you to think.

The cat probebly treed and your pup just couldn't locate it , bobs are hard to locate for younger dogs there not like a bear or lion that leaves alot of scent. It takes time and work with older dogs to get a hang on locating those things.

I only run bobs,if it's any consilation, the ones you see are the hardest to catch.Sometimes they can't even start them---who cvan figure this out? It's the age old debate on animals being/not being to hold their scent.

I turned out on a bobcat last week. The dogs brought the cat right in front of me back across the road. The dogs were about 200 yards behind it. That cat ran the dogs all day long, and never caught it. It just happens.

I'm in my first season of hunting my female strictly on cats. I've had several of those chases that just bombed out. The only thing to do is walk them out if possible, to confirm the loss. I have done that on occasion and when you can confirm the reason, such as putting a cat in a hole, loosing it on ice, crossing water or in ledges, etc, at least you know the reason. Both you and the dog can learn from it, and sometimes you can resume the chase if you figure out the loss and get the dog back in there. Even those chases that end with a loss are still alot of fun....I'm beginning to enjoy cat hunting more than any other game. Good luck and have fun. The dog will get better every time out!
