Young dog wont strike!
Young dog wont strike!
Any ideas? I have a yearling dog that makes it to the tree every time but cannot scent out a hot track. Before I put my lead dog on a track I try letting my younger dog find it and just walks right over it. He always has his nose to the ground but just cannot find a lion track. Last week I bayed up a cat and he got in on the action, took a couple of swipes from the lion and was still wanting to get at him. I was hoping this was what he needed (see it close up and smell it) but I haven't been able to run another one since then. Do you think the scenting will come around sooner or later or should I try something else?

We want our dogs to do it all from the start, let them grow up he will or not make a start dog. Time will tell. Dewey

hounds trail differently and learn at different rates. I focus on the trail aspect and so long as they show interest and head in the right direction i don't fuss to much. a hound that is to open is more of a liability then a more silent dog in my opinion. if he isn't completely sure of what he is smelling and where it's going I'd rather it not call the other hounds in. excitement is hat gets most hounds to get to opening up and he needs to realize that scent is Worth getting excited about and that take the right combination to fire him up.
