Toyota 4cyl. vs. 6cyl.

Going to buy a toyota pickup ext. cab from the 90's for bear and cat hunting in nw wi and northern mn. mostly flat country with swamps and can get deep snow in winter. will be hauling 4 dogs most the time with all the other junk you take with.Will put on more agressive tires and front bumper on it and mabye a flatbed and not sure what motor to get just want to here someone elses .02

i woudls go with the 4 banger better motor and will last longer then the 6 will

The 22R 4 cylinder series engines are great. I wish I still had mine.

I have had a couple early 90s with 3.0 V6. Never had the troubles others talk of. Currently have one with orig engine that still runs well.

Also have late 80s 4 cyl, currently have two, and they both run well.
No preference, just the 4cyl is easier to work on.

With either of them just take care of them, and don't get in a hurry to get anywhere.
Keep the truck as light as possible.
Also do not get an automatic transmission, had one of those and won't again.

I have had an 86 4 cyl the only problem i had i could not haul near what i can now with my v6 and it would tend to get hotter often. I currently have a 92 3.0 6 cyl ext cab and it is so much nicer compared to my 86. Well ill put it like this i can have 12 dogs loaded up and full tank of fuel 5 extra gallons of fuel and 5 extra gallons of water my big ice chest 2 buddies and all of our gear (ALOT OF STUFF) and still pull a small tent trailer and still keep a pretty good pace all the way up the big grades. Oh yea it's a 5 speed i think that helps out alot. I will own a toyota truck as long im able to get around in the hills (that should be alot of years) i hope. One more thing i bought the truck for 900 dollars and everything worked 4x4, air conditioning, cruise control, heater. Later DC

I have a 4cy and wish I had a 6. Pulling the boat up hill or into a big wind really slows it down. But other than that I love it!

I have a 94 yota 4 banger best damn truck ever mine has 270000 miles. It been jumped off little moter cycle jumps, rulled over, sunken to the top cab over 20 times, and washed down down a creek in the spring when the waters really flowing.and has never missed a beat.

Slick-I just bought a 91 with a 3.0 and 5 speed. I did allot of reaserch and came up with this. The 22re is bullit proof as long as you take care. the 3.0 is known to have head gasket problems. Good advice on the manual trans with either dont get an auto. Keep the tires aggresive but close to stock as I had 18's when i bought it and it is much nicer with 15s and a 30 inch tire. I would put a cold air intake and headers on mine as I've read it makes a huge difference. Good luck Stunt.

For strictly hound hunting I like the 4 best, they also seem to go in the snow better. maybe less weight is why? I really like my auto trans in the 98'. I dont abuse it, but there are times when I need to give it hell and it holds up fine. their was a time when I wouldnt be caught dead in anything that didnt have a manual. J.W.

I have a 96 xtra cab, 4 cyl 5 speed, 361000, not afraid to head anywhere in the country with it, runs and drives like a new truck. Now the bad, the frame is starting to rust through, they are notorious, for that. Toyota is going to buy it back. I should get pretty good money for it, but I hate to lose the truck

The V6 is actually well known for the intake gasket going out. Normally on the number 5 cylinder. A lot of shops don't diagnose it right, and go after the head gaskets right away. Because it is more money in their pockets!!! Just did one on my daughters truck. Did not really want to so asked a few shops about it. $12-$1800! I said yea right. Never did one before. I can say it is a pain in the butt, but not hard. In total about 12hrs of labor, and $175 for all the parts. Complete engine gasket kit from rockatuo.com $120. Then I got plugs, wires, cap, all fluids as well. When it is running the V6 is nice as their is more power. Gas mileage with the 4 is a lot better though!! Was getting about 12 in the woods, and 20 on the hwy before all the work. Have yet to see what it is getting now. Guessing not much better!!
