hey ken as far as I know you have to be either a member of a tribe or be taken by a member of the tribe you can't just go hunt their land by yourself. it's their own little country. least thats how it is by me. im not near navajo res.

Re: Arizona/Navajo reservation
We had some terrible bad experience on the San Carlos Indian Reservation in August, 2007.
Heard about all of the mountain lion and bobcats there, and called the San Carlos Wildlife Dept for info..
Was Advised:
Year around hunting.
Unit 29--did not need Indian Guide
Cost $10/day + $15 carcass tag
Could take 5 lion per year
Sounded great and we drove from OK to the reservation.
Decided to attempt to hire a guide to show us the lay of the country & hired one (we thought)--paid him $325 downpayment and furnished him food, mule, saddle, etc.--he showed up late every day(only 2 days & then never showed up again)??
After 7 days, found treed, and killed large lion. Dogs worked great. Took lion to San Carlos Wildlife Dept. where it was weighed and to get another lion tag.
San Carlos Game Ranger came up to me and took the lion and gave me a ticket for hunting without a Indian Guide. The Wildlife Dept person that advised me and sold me the license, admitted to Ranger that there was a communication error????
Game Ranger told me that I should have checked with him!!
Ended up that it cost me $310 fine and my cat was taken!!
My cat was twice as large as what was on display in Wildlife office(2 of them) & they wanted that cat.
Bottom line----I got to hunt great country for 8 days. Killed a lion with my pack of dogs that I trained on bobcats. Total cost of trip was under $2000. Did not get the cat, but had one hell of a good hunt.
My feeling---Screw the San Carlos Indians and their reservation!!
Lions and bear are thick there and have decimated the Bighorn Sheep & are working on their deer and elk!! They will tell you that themselves?
Couldn't happen to better group of people---the lying suckers!!!
Oh yeah, the Game Ranger and Wildlife Dept knew and would do nothing about the guide that took my money and did not post.
They will not have to worry about getting any more of my money or time, I can assure.

The Navajo Reservation does not allow the hunting of lions on the reservation. They do have an occasional problem lion and there is a call out list of houndsmen here that take care of the problems.
In reality there are very, very few lions on this reservation. They do allow bear hunting by permit holders only and they do have a lot of bear.
