I am going on 59. I know Ed and Bobby very well , Over the years interchanged some of the old dogs with them . At this time I have 6 of the real thing and 6 puppies. There is a big difference in the traits of the breed. I will first to admit the old line are in no way a compititition hound. they are stay close hunters but when they strike they will move a track all day. I hunt my dogs on lion, bobcat, coon, and coyotes. Had the hounds sence 1978.

I would love to post some pics for you, but as of this writing I'm still too stupid to post pictures so I would like to thank oakridge for as much as doing it for me, as it turns out that oakridge and I have some very similar blood and the pictures he posted could have been taken in my back yard for the look of them.

OK, guys, let me clear this one up. Old fashioned, long-eared Black & Tans are, for the most part the AKC registered variety, before recent developments in AKC that allowed the UKC type hounds to register with all that FSS baloney. There are some distinctive differences between the two types. Most of the AKC show type hounds are indeed worthless in the woods. However, a few people still bred hunting hounds. It is very important to find these people if you intend to buy a hound for hunting use. Kuester's Limberlost Black and Tans was formerly the place to buy for hunting, but they have gotten advanced in age and no longer breed hounds but sometimes still go for hunts with other guys...we're talking Ed is probably 87 now. Very nice people when I bought my two from them and I still keep in contact with them. The original bloodlines were Maple Hill, St. John, Ten Oaks, and maybe a little bit of Grand Mere. Some Twinlakes has been added over the recent past. Those are the original and pretty much ONLY lines that are true old fashioned bloodlines. Most others go back to Wagner stock somewhere and while Wagner hounds and Duncan's are very nice looking and successful game dogs, they are NOT truly old fashioned Black and Tans, nor are Boatman or Bloodworth, although they have many good qualities. Hope I didn't ruffle any feathers or anything, but that's just the way it is, not knocking any man or his hounds, just wanted to clarify that to a degree. I have done extensive research on these hounds and owned them for about 20 years now.

Hans Wagner was searching all over the midwestern US for quality, hard hunting, performance based B&Ts back in the 19-teens... UKC recognized them back around 1900...AKC was "Johnny-Come-Lately" in 1945 so I have never understood how those black bloodhound looking things got the tag of "old fashioned" lol.

They do definately have a houndier look to them. Their ears look a little more similar to those of a bloodhound or basset. Thanks for sharing them. Now I know.

Hey, Mort, before you write, learn to read. It might help. Yeah, Hans was looking but for the most part unsuccessfully. Also, whether you are aware of it or not, in the beginning and all the way up through to the early 1990's most of the hounds that are now AKC registered were dual registered AKC/UKC. What I'm getting at here is that if a guy looks at pictures of UKC hounds from pre-1940 or pre-imposter breeder days, he will find that they are for the most part a large, heavy boned, long-eared, heavy flewed hound. WhatI do not understand is the eagerness on the part of some individiuals to discredit these old fellas.

I know this is an older post but I now have a Duncan pup and one of the AKC b&t's. My Duncan pup is long earred and has great markings same as my AKC. However, they are completely different animals...

Where'd Tennessee Lead come from?? Tell me a bit more about this hound. What was his lineage? What place does he have in the breed? What impact? Starting when?

Tennessee lead came from around the Tennessee , Kentucky line at around 1852 not only was he an old fashion black and tan but he was also the sire of the first walker hounds. google tennessee lead with george washington maupin for more history.

They look so similar but they are just way different... Duncan's pup is on the right.
