Where did all the cold nosed walkers go?

Post by doghunter2 »

I was just wondering where a guy could find some cold nosed walkers anymore. I use to hunt a strain of old style walkers that AL renick and I had, but unfortunately they are all gone partly my fault. I have tried several different lines with no sucess.I think an old track to most people anymore is 1 hour tops. My old line of hounds could trail run and catch 12 hour old bobcat on dry ground in rough country. Not trying to start a pissing match just some help.

Pretty sure Jim of Fall River Walkers still has some Renick line dogs. I'm not sure what the nose on them is like, but I know he catches game. www.fallriverwalker.com -- I'm sure he'll chime in.

I've got a few that have pretty good noses. There are more out there than it seems. You just have to look.

LOOK ON THE CLASSIFIEDS FOR MY POST ON THE WALKER I HAVE FOR SALE. HE COMES FROM OKLAHOMA WHERE DOGS HAVE TO BE ABLE TO HUNT IN HOT-DRY DUST BOWLS THERE. HE COMES FROM A PROVEN CROSS AND WILL MAKE A HOUND ON WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE TO RUN HIM ON.

if you want walkers with noses stay away from big name dogs. i'd find some cat hunters outwest cause all the walkers in the southeast are so dang tree minded and had the nose bred out of them.

If you're from Oregon,I'd look no futher than right here--in what's available.I've waisted time and money[not saying they were bad]but I've yet to find the cold nosed, heads up,track driving dogs from anywhere else[missouri, colorado, utah, new mexico, wyoming, montana, arizona]taht match the dogs, that the dillegent breeders of catdogs here in the Northwest have put together.
Tim 541-912-6464 call me I'll give you Zip's,Dewey's,JC Freeman's numbers if you want them.

I agree with Tim, but disagree also. Buy dogs bred for your area and terrain, and game hunted. The NW has fine cat dogs, as that is what they focus on. The Clay boys out of Ark. has fine dogs to, 180 cats a year isnt nothing to sneeze at. When it comes to bear, doubt either line of dogs would work here in WI. There is some dam cold nosed dogs here, but i doubt you will see several litters available on this site for sale. Most dont sell any or very limited, including myself. Try and get a clay pup once  LOL. There is some dogs in the NE which get it done, again, dogs bred for your area, and game, i feel will suit you the best.

I agree with tim completely on this. I have searched all over the country and i have come up with the same conclusion. If you think that these cat dogs dont have what it would take to be bear dogs then i say buy a pup from someone and give it a shot. I have a few friends over in the valley and they have dogs that cold trail stuff that alot of dogs dont even know is there and im not talkin just booger barkin either, it completely made me rethink about what a cold nosed dog actually is. Just like with you boys in WI, not too many people sell a lot of pups but if you manage to get in pretty good with some of the names that tim mentioned and himself too, then im sure you will have yourself a fine pup in the future. Good luck in your search.

Hey Southerndix or Tim I'm Kinda curious!! How do those west side or valley dogs that hunt alot of dry or bare ground do over on the eastside of the state. I'm talking higher elevation deeper snow. I usually hunt above 5000 feet. thanks like I said just curious.

culverz, they do good. I live @ 4750 in elevation and everything from my place is up up up. The last time my buddy was here and just kicked his coastal dogs loose we cold trailed a cat all day and ended up catching it at 5:00 and let loose at 9:00. I have been very impressed with the nose, ability, athletisism, and drive of all the dogs that i have come in contact with from over that way. Not to mention that they rig a super old bobcat track like a big ol stinky ass bear just walked out infront of them. For the dogs coming over here its like going from the jungle and heading straight into the desert. This is only what i have seen with my own two eyes though :D

Southern Dix, I have no doubt your dogs, would trail bear here, with style, and have very capable noses to do just that. Its what they do with the bear once they catch it, and have grit to get it up a tree, that is the challenge. I will be doing a puppy trade with one of the guys you mentioned, and as he said, its easy to breed cat dogs, your trying to breed a combination dog, of cats and bear, thats a tougher challenge.

Sorry new to this online stuff, i would agree with Tim when he mentions dillegent breeders no matter where they are, to me that is key and there are very few who can do it successfully, some sound good but most real breeders are hard to find and breed for themselves to hold what they have, have to respect that, like this tim guy.
