Hunting dog lease?

A couple of years ago I leased my horse for the spring and summer because I never used him during that time of the year. I found someone that wanted him during that time and I got him back right before hunting season in great shape so it worked out for everyone. I am thinking about doing this with my dogs. I have two hounds that hunt bears lions and coons well but living in montana I end up hunting a few coons and maybe roading them a time or two outside of the lion season which is december 1 - april 15. Basically I would give someone wanting to get into the sport (preferably bears) all of the collars, leads, dog box, everything and they would hunt and take care of the dogs well during the spring and summer and I would be happy knowing that my dogs are hunting and healthy. Has anyone had any experience with this? Also, if anyone is interested and would like to talk more about it please PM me with a phone number.

Personally I would NOT do it with-out a substantial up front cash deposit unless I knew the people real well . Credit and possible Criminal background check would not hurt either . I do both of these on my RENTAL properties .Isn't that basicly what you are doing ,Renting your personal property. Collectively what is it all worth .Have you got insurence to cover all that . If something goes really wrong can you stand being sued? Lots of points to consider.

I don't think I would trust just anyone with my hound too much can go wrong. That being said I have a buddy that lives on a 10,000 ac. ranch surrounded by forest land that keeps my dogs all year long and use's them for damage control for his live stock and when I go hunting I have a nice place to stay if I hunt the ranch or some times I'll bring them home for a week or two and hunt different country then take them back to him but I have know him for about 20yrs and he has had hounds before and knows how to hunt & handle dogs

Hoyter, We are on the other side of things when it comes to this....we would charge you money to hunt your dogs and ride your horses.

It sounds like a good deal if you can find the right person. I would imagine anyone that is already catchin game and has a pack of dogs is doing just that....a few more dogs is just a burden. You never know but id be careful with someone that is interested in doing this....they might not have a clue what they are doing and too many thing can go wrong even in the right hands.

If a dog needs to go to the vet or gets killed who is gonna be responsible? I know all i am responsible for in training hounds is feed, water, and giving them the time on the mountain. If they want them to be safe well just leave them on the chain. Everything else is up to the owner. Make sure you get this all ironed out before the deal goes through and have a contract of some sorts.

I am a retired hound hunter guide of 40 + years.
The key here is trust.
I still hunt and train hounds for outfitters and friends for nothing!
They furnish dogs , gps, collars and dog food , boxes and so on.
We are all grown realistic mature people.
They know things could and do go wrong.
Wolves, sickness and accidents.
Flip side dogs get used , experiance, in shape and baby sitted.
No charge.
Better than sitting on a chain or kennell getting pen stail!
Works for me.

Never leased a hound, but I used to lease bird dogs to a hunt club out of Tucson AZ. for their winter seasons. It was a great gig for me and them. I took em back in the summer and kept them tuned up, and shipped them back in the winter. I had a contract that covered vet costs accidental death (had one peppered with bird shot) they paid all costs, I shipped the dog home and sent them a replacement. This was to a business though, and not individuals. I did end up selling a few to people who used them on the preserve.

I don't think I would or could do it with hounds though. Too many "lost" dogs, too many variables I would not feel comfortable with. Now, I have and would continue to loan dogs to trusted friends, but never a stranger.

An interesting question. Bear dogs never, cat dogs never, but maybe My two brothers, or my hunting buddies know better then to ask, if i'm not there, my dogs isnt either. Heck, i got a hard enough time keeping them pointed in the right direction, let alone someone else But i run young dogs
