utah dept of agriculture managing our lions?

I was talking to a dwr cop the other day and he told me that it is being rumored at the division that they are cosidering turning the lions over to the dept of agriculture. What does this mean for us if it happens???

Interesting. I figure you guys should tone it down on saving the females and some of that talk cause DWR is certainly reading this board--don't ever think they are not. If you could get all the houndsmen to sign in blood that they wouldn't kill another female under any condition you might well see the state throw us out of the sport and put professionals doing it. At a minimum, you'll see snares, traps and some of the ADC guys that have dogs killing those females that you walked away from on hunter's monies. Some of this stuff should be talked about behind closed doors.

it shouldn't have to be talked about at all. it has always been the unspoken law. I am concerned that if dept of ag gets ahold of it they will call open season on them. maybe this would not be the case. I will wait for those who know more about it than me to chime in and then we'll know.

I haven't heard any talk of this, I will do some investigating into it.....I'm sure the dwr has looked at the way usda has manged coyotes...lol we are over run by them .... hahaha

Not to afraid of them hunting lions. For one thing its WAY too much work for a guy getting a salary when you can snare bears and coyotes out of the truck 20 feet or off a dead calf that died of natural causes anyway. Don't think for one second that they don't already try to kill lions. As far as all this talk about killing females or not and what the dwr will do.....they want all lions dead now as they are already in bed with swf. WE are the only ones that can help our sport. Glad to see some are stepping up to the plate.

sad thing is that most of the kills found and blamed on the lions are coyote kills.

Dwr is supposed to pay 500000 for coyote control this year I'm going to stay on top of it and see how much they actually pay....personaly I think every deer hunter should be required to turn in 5 coyotes in order to get a deer permit.....let's see they sell 97000 deer tags every year times that by 5 coyotes for every deer hunter....I'm not good at math but I think that would be around 485000 less coyotes left here in utah....coyote ptoblem SOLVED!!!

No it isn't just you that doesn't know what he is talking about it is everyone that has posted on this post. But you should really do your homework before you start a post like this because it make you real foolish.

devin I am just sharing the information that a game warden shared with me. If it's not true then great. if it is true then what? I could really care less what you think I will continue to post stuff that I hear from dwr and air it so the truith comes out. I don't know anything about the dept of ag or what they do, just that it alarmed me that they might take measures against lions.

First off they don't manage any animal including coyotes that is up to your state fish and wildlife board. And the only animals that the USDA kills is problem animals, killing livestock or any animal that is a human health or safety issue. The USDA is not paid to controll the states population of coyotes, and most of the money paid to the USDA to take care of problem animal comes from livestock Assc, like the Woolgrowers Assc and the Cattlemans Assc. So these are areas that are worked for problems, lambing and calving grounds. Not very likely areas that lions would be coming into anyway. Bears cause more problems to livestock than lions and more to lambs and sheep than cattle.
Some States also kick in some money, some counties also kick in money if they are having problems with human health and safety. Your dwr guy is very misinformed or he is trying to get you all worked up.
