The Last Collar

Down to the our last collar for the season, we caught this mature 90 lb. female yesterday.
The little B&T is one of my Kostnik females, the other is also one of Janet's hounds a female I got from her 8yrs ago and the Ol fella with the white wiskers is "Ol Dan" , he'll be 14 in April!!!

Nice job Brent! I am glad to see the years you have got out of that old man. He looks very healthy for a senior, not many strains of hounds can folks get that type of longevity out of. I am always glad to read one of your posts and see your photo's they are refreshing. Hope the old man makes a few more tree's.

I feel Janet has some great blood lines going in her kennels as the two I have gotten from her will never be for sale.
Hard hunting hounds, with awesome temperment and super easy to handle.
They are good lookin hounds as well if you like B&T's

I feel pretty fortuniate to be able to be out treein lions like I am and sharing the photo's is what's it's about..

Like me the ol fella is slowin up some...my oldest hound was a B&T cross.... 15 when he died of a twisted bowle

9 for the study so far...hope to get 2 more before the end of April.
I've been very lucky and have had several hounds pass the 10 year old mark, dry bedding and a warm place out of the weather, I road mine alot when not hunting them ,good feed and water....they will last.

What dog food do you feed? I havent been doing this long enough to get a old dog my first dog would be 8 if she hadn't died last spring. but the guy I use to hunt with has had dogs longer then i have been alive mostly black and tans his seemed to really go down hill at 10 years old with many getting tumors I'm sure feed and genetics would play a big role on that but I was just curious as to what you feed your dogs to have them still going that good.

Right now I feed a mix of Ol'roy which is terrible i know but they also get dead calves/cows I get from my Dads ranch..

I have never been fussy what type I feed as long as it has a good protine and fat content...Purina High Pro, Sure-Gain, Ol Roy, Black Gold ( when we could get it) there are numerous I have bought and they have all done me well.
One thing I do is change or mix different brand names together, if it's real cold and I want to give them extra energy to help keep them warm I mix calf milk replacer and give that to them in place of water...don't over do this...it gets messy if you do!!!
I also feed alot of beef and game scraps, some say never feed wild game, toss that advice, it's good for them.

Brent, I am glad to see that you listed several dog food brands (including Ol' Roy) that have worked well for you ( I feed Diamond). I would wager that in addition to a good diet that your dogs are on a good worming program. Too many people just give Ivomec, etc. and think they have completely wormed their dogs. MANY wormers, including Ivomec, will NOT kill all types completely.

Interesting you mention that....I have not wormed my hounds in over 20 years!!!!!!!
I have never had a problem nor have I ever found worms....
Why I do not know, maybe we just do not have the exposure here ???????
My biggest issue is keeping them in solid hunting condition, they gain weight if not exercised ....
They are healthy and the less I doctor them the better I see it...

`Brent, your situation is very interesting. Are your dogs confined or do they run loose? If they are confined then the cold temps may keep worms from spreading?? Proba bly heart worms, spread by mosquitoes here, are not a problem for you. Here in Texas we must guard against all sorts of intestinal worms plus heart worms.

My hounds are kenneled seperate from one and other in the trees for shade in the summer with K-9 Kondo houses and plenty of straw for bedding both summer and winter, keeping it clean is important as well.
Heart worm is basicly non existant in the northern part of the US and Canada.
I'm sure if they ran loose and traveled areas where there were alot of other dogs worms would pose a problem.
Maybe I am just lucky in not having to deal with that aspect in hunting hounds, I don't know.
I exercise my hounds alot all season even when I am hunting lions I still run them daily and my old male that is turning 14 in April has had more than his share since he was a pup and he still gets run alot.
That is one of the main factors I feel he has done so well and is still hunting at his age.
