Suggestions for a Dog that claims the kill.
Im lookin for some ideas on how to get a dog to stop claimin the kill. Hes only about a year an a half old. Thingin de-nutin might be my only option. He doesn't really seem to show any agrestion at the tree that i've seen. Just when u shoot it out. He will claim it and attack any dog that gets too close. I've tryed disipling him for it, but it don't seem to sink in. Not sure what to do. Hes young and hasn't been on much game but does everything like a pro, im pround of the dog just not happy about this someone got any ideas i would love it.

Tie him up before you shoot game...
It can be trained but its alot of work and some unpleasantness for dog.
The easier path is what I describe above.
Just my .02c

tie him up, let him be the last one to the game. after the other dogs are done

I agree with stanleybearhunter, and BoarHunter1. I've seen male and female do it. As long as he isnt fighting under the tree, just tie him back.

i'm having a similiar problem with my 2 year old. except i noticed as long as i'm not around the kill. he doesn't jump on another dog. if i have him close to a dead bear on a leash he'll jump on any dog that comes near us

I have a female that does this and what I do is see it as a alpha thing. I'd grab her by the skin an tug her off yell at her. I sort of take the kill. Then, she and the others get a bite here and there. I let them know that it is mine and I'm sharing it with them. After a while, she still does it but will stop if I yell. Just my experience.

I agree with bency. You have to be on top of matters quick and you cant just give him a swat and say no put him to the ground and take the fight and wind out of him after a couple times of this and he doesnt respond cut him and if that doesnt work you have what you have. Andy

Re: Suggestions for a Dog that claims the kill.
You have to come down on him hard every time he trys this... then make him stay away from the kill and allow the others thier fun unless he can play nice. Nuetering him will likly not have much effect alone... by this I mean don't cut them off and expect him to suddenly be totaly laid back.
Tieing them back deals with that incident and can be a permanent solution if you are willing to always tie back. But I feel letting them make the mistake and then correcting it right away and claiming it for yourself is better in the long run.
If your dog is hard headed like so many of these types are it may take a few months to totaly trust him. Just keep at it and try not to lose your temper... there is a fine line between beating a dog and showing him who is boss
Some can take a bit more hands on and some only require a harsh voice to get your point across.

Dont take it to lightly cuz at the tree is one thing but if they happen to catch it on the ground in the bottom of some canyon and you cant get into them for awhile it could get ugly!

Re: Suggestions for a Dog that claims the kill.
Thanks for the advice guys. Most of its what i've already been doin. I know it takes time, some days it just gets a little frustrating. Yea i always tie back before i shoot something out of the tree, and have already thought about lettin him have his seperate woolin time. The hard part is the damn dog has no fear. He lisens and handles great. But i swear hes crazy cause he just goes wild when hes able to sink some teeth. I had him litteraly tear apart two role cages just to get to whats in side. but like i've said his only flaw is claimin the kill. And was hopin someone had an idea that i haven't really tryed yet. Sound like i'll just keep up with what i've been doin and hope it sinks in. thanks again guys.

the training can start at home around the food dish with shocking collar chances are he is the same with other dogs around his food . if you can do it in a way he doesnt know your responsible he may behave when your not around such as out in the field . that being said some dogs will never give it up .
