Re: keeping cat s up at night
check the trees around were your dog is treeing the wind might be just right for the scent to come down at an angle i have treed cats where they were 15 feet up hill from were the dogs treed. anytime i tree a cat at night and i hunt mainly nights i check a big area around were the dogs are treeing if its not in the tree the dogs are on.
cant never could

come on you guys the old dogs catch him and bay him up then he moves on two or three times before it trees????????????????? bull hockey
if you have two or three dogs they will stretch him if he stays on the ground. and generally if a cat comes out of a tree it usually means that you have a dog that will climb up there and push him out.

There are lots of excuses made for dogs. We all really know the truth.

If you are only running one dog where I hunt 1 or two out of ten will jump when they hear or see you. Anyone that says they won't is speaking beyond there experience. I have seen them jump more than once.

up4trein1 if you figure out whats going on please let us know, every serious hunter on this forum has probably had simular problems. I left my old dog @ home and only took my best 3 young dogs, I wanted to see how they would do w/out the lead dog. I walked an old muddy logging spur & with my help they got a cat going, they moved it pretty well made a few lose's & picked them up fairly fast. about 40 min into the race they made a longer lose, then tried to locate and tree. It sounded good so I knew they either made a lose & false tree'd or the cat was up. I started into the tree and not long after they quit treeing. I gave them a few minutes then one of the dogs jumped the track about 100 yrds up the hill from where they had been tree'd, the jump was hot and they tree'd again 20 min later. I moved in quickly this time & right before I could get in there the dogs shut up and then went to moving the track again and sounding jumped, another 20 min went by and tree'd again, having the feeling i was being lied to i moved above them, and came into the tree from above this time. I moved real slow and used my light very little and once again they shut up but this time i had luck on my side because i heard something coming through the brush. the proof i needed. a slow pregnant doe, i let her slip past and sure enough here came my hounds moving fast and just starting to open jumped. the look on their face's was priceless when i yelled out. these dogs were 80% broke, hunting from the truck or 4wheeler they would check & play the part of a broke dog but in the heat of the moment & w/out me being there keeping track. they turned deer burners, for the most part the race sounded good. yes tree bark & bay are different but sometimes it's hard to tell with young dogs. if i would'nt have gone in there i could have told myself I'm running a cat. For me a young dogs guilty until proven innocent a guy needs to be honest with himself . from the responces it sounds like a cat jumps more than what I've seen here. but i would think a cat that jumps that much is eventually stretched. hope this was helpful. Just joined this site my experience running cats is three times I coin hunt but very untreated the reason. I say three times is I got this old coin hound that is silent on track 90% accurate no trash what so ever. Borrowed him off my friend to help train my pup this last seaon. Three times this last yr he opened up on track like a champ every breath treed then started running track again did this about 3-4 times asked my buddy y he said running cats they trained him with house cats when little and that's the only thing hell open up on never saw the cat thought. To make long story short (little late now) talked to a Guy one day who is a great hounds man many bears said the only way to efectivly kill cats with dogs in south west Virginia us to ho at about 4 am let your dig tree then wait till sun up move in real slow and as soon as you can see the cat shot it out with a high power rifle usual he said about 75-100 yda away. He showed me pic from two yrs ago 7 cats with one dog. He said no way can someone walk up to a cat around here at night with light cat will jump every time
