I seen a classified ad where the guy is selling his Maxima and 4 collrs to buy one.
Not sure I would sell my proven tracking system on a system that has not be proven.

i think--- going about it wrong with astro-
putting a gps on the dog ----- and using weak radio to send info back to user-
putting a lot of faith in a rubber duckie antenna--
i think they could modify gps to triangulate signal from a regular tracking collar- and make this thing work--
everybody who uses a reciever triangulates collars-- even if they dont realize it -- take reading from one point you have a direction-- (compass bearing ) take reading from two known points on a map and where these lines intersect is location of collar-
now i rarely use a map to do this but i have before when i was stumped -
i do it all the time -just mentally by just moving a little and takeing another reading--- if u go down the road aways and direction doesnt change they are a long ways off -- lol if it changes alot they arent far-
most the time , i use a scanner with no gain or attenuator so i have to be pretty good at this to judge distance--
if can merge reciever with gps and use regular telemetry collar , would really have something--
eliminates problem with range and batteries--
wouldnt it be great to look at a screen on reciever and it says dog is 2.2 miles northwest -- and on same screen can see a road there --
or see that there isnt--
i know this idea is worth billions but just send me one if you build it -
im fairly certain that this could be built right now with technology we have--

scanner and gps should be one unit

i dont want to sound too negative-- i want that garmin to work-
i cant wait to get rid of my yagi antennas
sure would be nice to only have to carry a gps to locate dogs-
i had the shock collars with the external rubber duck type antenna and they got broke off so fast in the brush just wern't practical -
i got a tracking collar now QT with rechargeable changeable battery ---
is small, lightweight , and a great signal-
and the antenna is junk ------ broke off twice so far--
its crimped on to a fitting so can be changed by user-
if they soldered it on, it wouldnt need changing -
nothing worse than stuff that falls apart when you are really counting on it --

Pete, Something I have started doing is using heat shrink tubing, I found it at auto parts store. Cut a piece four inches long and put it on the same spot as most put innertube, put some heat to it and I guarantee you won't have to replace it. If I hadn't dropped my camera again and broke it I would post a picture of one of my collars. This is the second camera in as many years that I have broken. ( Wife is really proud of me!!)

just my two scents worth... I own a GARMIN GPS72 just so I can find my way back to the truck. Its a great product but I don't leave my compass behind. I love up GPS but when your the ceiling is pine branches and your in the thickets it tends to lose signal. As far as tracking the dogs..I would concider everything..

there's a post on a pet hound board
from someone using one. They don't run the hounds as hard as we do, and they have had problems with the antenna breaking off too, but it is kind of neat to see the trails the dogs are running. If you had a desk job, you could follow your buddy's race on your computer!
Think you have to register on the board to see the pix, but here's a link:

thats the GPS track of two B&Ts... If you scroll back, there are pix of the dogs, forward shows the track on Google Earth satellite view.

It sure seems like a good idea, and when Garmin or someone else combines their technology with the know-how of someone who understands how to build a system sturdy enough for hounds, I'll want one. For now, though, I'll stick with a loudmouth hound and a Marshall collar...

Just picked one up , for a 30 day trail , I well post my results in a few days, it well be attached to my quick trac tracking collar just incase i lose the signal.
ive had one for about a mont or so now and havent had any problems so far, the antenna is really flexible and hasnt broke yet. Im still backing it up with a strike collar for good measure. the system is super easy to use and the transmit time is adjustable for increasing battery life in the collar, i changed mine from the factory 5 second time to 10 seconds for now and it can be bumped up to 30 seconds which could increase the battery life quite a bit. I have it on one of my e-collars and havent used the harness that comes with it. The reciever has a battery guage on it so you can see any time it transmits what the current battery level is. The gps unit is the most accurate one ive ever had and ive had about a half dozen so far.

I got to use one this weekend. We just slid it on the dogs regular tracking collars. Now I would never turn a dog out without their tracking collar on, just because I imagine eventually a antenna is going to break BUT these things are kick ass to use. We were using them in the heavy timber that turned into thick underbrush and then they got into some rock bluffs. We only had two of the GPS systems on the dogs. Occasionally we would lose a dog, then they would come back on.. These are really nice. We shocked a dog on a bear and he was sitting off the road about 75 years. It showed us where he was.... And was showing us what roads the dogs were on and where the roads were (that stuff has to be downloaded) We are going to buy one.. I will still run them on my regular tracking collars.. But these are really cool... I just wish they were a bit smaller..
