good day turned bad

Post by az_gogetem »

My partner had to work yesterday and I couldn't talk anybody else into going with me. So I took 7 dogs out and ran a female lion. We caught her the day before and just let her go cause she was a little female (ranchers get mad but we let em go) and she's good for training dogs.

Well the dogs smoked out on about a 14 hr track. Treed in about a mile and a half. This lion went up a mesquite tree that was maybe 6.5 foot tall. She didn't stand a chance the dogs yanked her out and by the time I got to em (i was up on the hill above them when she treed) she was half dead so i pulled all the dogs off and she tried to get up and walk away but she couldn't. i didn't have a gun, a knife, hell i had two lead ropes a flashlight and batteries for the tracking unit in my pack and thats it. I had no intentions of killing a female lion. But I no longer have a lion tag since she died right there. This old wench smelled like a cross between a skunk and a javalina I contemplated leaving her and coming back with my mule as she was in pretty rough country. i threw her on my shoulders and headed down country though. 4 showers later im still smelling skunk.

i was already thinking about taking a bunch of pups in today and running her again but the dogs decided they wanted her more than i did.

The positive spin on it is that she was definitely past her reproducing days. Most of her teeth were missing and K-9's were all worn down flat. that kind of stuff can happen in this country real quick. i should've known better than to leave the gun at the truck.

im trying to upload pictures from my phone but its not working. i'll try to add them later.

this is the tree she tried to climb thats my fanny pack at the base.

Too bad you had to punch your tag like that but makes for a good story, your dogs did their job and they all went home, so it could be worse.
You did the right thing, so kudos to you.

Ya i'm very thankful it could have been a lot uglier. Only one of the dogs had any kind of serious injuries took about 6 staples but she'll be fine. I just hate seeing a female go down. I didn't know how old she was at that point. We don't have an abundance of lions down here like some of the other states in the west. i hate nothing more than going out and not cutting a track all day.
