My dad and I packed in there for several years elk hunting and it is some of the best looking country I have ever been in. However, we stopped packing in the 9 hours from the trailhead because all we would see is wolves and tracks of wolves. Our last trip we didnt hear a bugle or see an elk but seen three different wolves, in different areas our last day. In addition on our last trip we never cut a bear or lion track the whole ten days we were in there. We went in just south of Hamilton MT.
Good luck

used to run a bit in selway zone! Only go there if you want to get out of hound hunting cause number 1 the wolves are thick and its not if its when you get the pack killed! number 2 the road system is very limited in most of the unit, if it has roads most likely you will be elbow to elbow with other houndmen! The selway zone is not for the faint of heart, dogs will be lost for weeks in that country and most likely be wolf food! There is a reason they give unlimited non resident hound permits for a couple of those units because no one in their right mind would hound hunt it!

You can probally get away with running lions in the winter some if you do it right but you won't be able to keep on top of your dogs with bears. Wolves are likely to show up at trees or before and if you aren't there quick 3 hounds vs. a dozen wolves and you are out of hounding.

You guys said it, wolves and more wolves. But we can say that about all of north Idaho now. Turning hounds loose in Idaho is truelly a gamble any more...
Between the wolves and the whole, no roads thing, it will make hunting the Selway zone an adventure for sure.

I used to hunt it some but I quit it for the wolves, never really bear hunted it but liked it for both bobcats and lions. I have went in from the Lochsa some and in the summertime a guy could come in from Elk City, but spent most of my time coming in from the Montana side. I personally won't hunt it any more for the wolves, but then I can hunt anywhere in the state, if everybody hasn't convinced you to stay home you can get maps from the forest service. If you call the office they should be willing to mail them to you (for an additional price of course.
