black cats

Post by wwsmokeydo »

i was watching tv tonight and on history channel the show monster quest talked about the sighting of black solid black mountain lions in the eastern us from OK on east. if this were actually true i could see this being a jaguar or black panther. but my question has anyone seen any other oddities like albino cats or other color cats out here in the west. ive seen a solid reddish color like :agmnt red even. but thats not all the odd even. so any thoughts or comments are welcome its just a fun post i guess.

thanks

I don't know about black panthers now a days here in the US, but that is a gene in the mix. I have read old journels of some of the first white men in Florida and they tell of black ones. Any crackers on here that can speak to black panthers?

There are black ones in Texas that get sighted every once in awhile.

I've seen pictures of a white lion killed in WY. But never a black one.

Fellows,

In five of the southernmost Counties in Florida the Bobcat population seems to have a Melanistic Gene present. There have been several killed on the Highways during the last part of the 20th Century.

Several years ago one was live trapped and is being studied by the Fish and Game.

As to BLACK Lions, Pumas, Catamounts, Panthers. et al.....this topic has been discussed before here on BGH. As far as I can determine after much research there has never been a "Documented" Case of a Melanistic Mt. Lion in North America....Several dark brown that appeared Black (ref. to pics postied on thread in the archives) but never a confirmed case.

Lore and Historical Methology is full of references to "Black Panthers", much like the siteings of Sasquatch, Bigfoot, Chupacara's, and Ole Ike's Rig Dogs!

Mr. McBride from Alpine, TX, who has Cat hunted on three or four contenients and caught literally Hundreds of Lions in Texas has never seen one. In his writings that can be found on the Internet, he states that there "ain't any Black ones"!

For more great thoughts on this go back to the previous threads!

Keep and eye out in a few months, I will be posting proof positive if black lions are true or not.

Dean I too am interested in the Proof Positve of Melanistic Big Cats in North America....can you give us some hints as to your research?

Strawberry....here are some links:

http://www.cryptomundo.com/cryptozoo-ne ... ack-bobcat

http://www.cryptomundo.com/cryptozoo-news/07blk-bobcat

I think that Dean posted the good picture of the Dark Lion on the other threads, maybe he would repost as I can not find that thread or Post.

Don't laugh too hard when you read this one! In the South there are literally millions of Deer Hunters afield from Aug. 15th (SC) till late Feb. (FL). These nimrods are equiped with telescopic sited Rifles who are accurate as hell....these fellows can blow a hole plumb through an eight pound Sow Bobcat @ 300 yards....yet there are NO Lion Hero Photos of either Brown or Black color phase.

http://www.michigancougar.com/black.htm

Trail Cam photos do allow the Creative Mind to run wild, there was a Pic not long ago on here that I even thought could be someting other than what it was....I thought possible Jagaurundi till DerekE pointed out that the Pics was from just outside of Ft. Worth TX, several hundred miles East of any know home to this rare critter.

If you Google Black Bobcats or Black Mt. Lions you will get lots of BS Posts.....with enough Imagination anything can be seen.....when much younger and motivated by some of Big N Blues favorite "40 Creek Single Barrel" I have seen some strange sights!

An old friend of mine that was one of the men that did a lot of bounty hunting for lion and one that told it like it was, unlike some of the hound men. His name was Joe Jackson out of Douglas county Oregon, when asked said he had killed one black lion. The family may have a picture. I saw a picture of one crossing a field up Myrtle creek, taken in the 80'. Dewey

Here is an additional story of the Trapped Florida Black Bobcat with the Trappers comments.

Notice how the size changes from the Trappers 16 lbs to the writers 20 lbs!

Mr. Dewey, I think Mr. Mike L. may have posted about a Lion taken years ago that appeared almost Black....I just can not make the BGH search engine find the Thread from a couple of years ago!

I found something that may interest you guys on this subject. In the July, 1959 Full Cry Magazine there is a picture of a black "panther, cougar , etc" not sure what they were claiming it as. This cat was killed in the Ozark Mountains by a Matt Todd from Houston, Missouri. They article claims he has the original picture. The article was called Black Panther and was written by O.O. Grant of Willow Springs, Missouri.
This article made for good reading on the myth or the fact of Melanesian cats in North America. You can also find this article such as I did on page 15, in the 2008 American Blue Gascon Hound Association book. I'm sure they may be a few of you on here who belong to the club and may have that book kicking around still.

we have them in western north carolina but getting anyone to admit it can be hard. they are here but do a good job staying in remote areas. several have been seen one guy was chased by one(black) on a four wheeler. i believe the population is growing due to the introduction of elk and better deer management and also larger bear sanctuaries. a fawn colored one was seen stalking two does in the park a lil over a year ago. just in the past year sightings have grown and last october some live stock went missing and they would find the dead animals picked clean but the head and covered up with brush or stuff like that. also found some good sized cat tracks while deer hunting in the snow way back in the back country two years ago. to give you an idea of the size i can palm a basket ball and wear a size 13 ring and it was larger than my fist. at least once a month you hear bout someone hearing one scream.
