question on southern bobcat hounds.

I found a couple bobcat hounds in Tennessee that can catch their own bobcat on dry ground. I live up north where most of my hunting is in the snow. The dogs are blueticks, one is vaughn and smokey river bred and i don't remember the other dogs breeding. My question is will they run in the snow good having never done it before? It might be a dumb question, but i know a guy that bought coyote hounds from down south and they wont run in the snow up here. Looking forward to some info. Thanks!!

I had this problem this year while hunting in the snow. Every track we put my dogs on, they acted like nothing had ever been there. It took me a little bit to figure it out, but I realized that they, being young dogs, had never cold-trailed anything in the snow. Once my buddie's dogs got the varmint jumped, my dogs kicked right in like they knew how. I would think if they're good enough dogs, they will probably figure it out with a little help. It might be best if you already have a couple dogs that know what they're doing in the snow. JMO...

Beimel,

You have purchased these Hounds at the right time as now they have time to Aclimate to your area.

TN should have had enough Snow for your new CatHounds to be at least somewhat familiar with the White Stuff!

Given time and Hunted regularly on the early Snows.....these Hounds should be as good in PA as they were in TN!

Just be patient with them, if they were Real Hounds in TN, after Aclimation in PA should be the same Hounds.

Make Damn sure to go Hunt with them and see them produce Game!

If they can catch on the dry ground.
They should have no problem on snow.
Just make sure they can do what they are said to do.
Put them with a trashy dog & see what they do.
Are u talking 1 or 2 cats a year
or 1or 2 cats a week?

denny davis bought a hound from florida that was supposed to be a top cat hound down there . his face certainly showed some cat wear and tear. he had him for awhile when me and loyd found a fresh bob track that was less than a half hour old in the fresh falling snow . denny came right to us ,and put the dog down .he wouldnt even aknowledge a cat was there .he tried walking him on the track nothing. he called the guy back ,and he took him back with no problems . snow is a hurdle for a dog that must be overcome for a dog up here.not all dogs like it especially when its deep.i would imagine no different then sending a top hound to florida that has never had to swim.

Even beagles that have never been run on snow have to be shown how. It takes a few seasons to get them going good. If your just starting out buy a dog already running in snow then throw a pup in with it.
