Re: how many dogs do u need to effectively run bobcats?
This is a very good post but the way I have read the ? (how many dogs do you need to effectively run bobcats?) it can be any where from 1 to a pack but to effectively CATCH bobcats thats what I have been trying to figure out for alot of years and still havent found the majic number or even the majic dog. I truely dont think there is that one dog or even pack that can consistantly go all over the country and catch bobcats in this manner with out acclumating to that certain area. Andy

Seriously???
But Apparently you don't like his Point of View, so your going to pick on him now..
I can see you missed my point, and your offended. I'm sorry. I'll let you in on a secret. It was a figure of speech, I didn't really believe my question that I asked you.
I had already forgotten about it.
I promise... If You ever Hear me seriously telling someone else what they should do with their dogs, I assure you make one call to my wife and She will kick my ass off this site and won't let me forget why we are into the dogs. It has nothing to do with this website, and nothing to do with Numbers or statistics.
PS: I clearly stated early on this was going to test the new rules. I figured this was going to go into a Pissing match.. Who should I bann right now with my new rules?? If we want to discuss further we should start a different topic so we can leave this post alone.
Buddy
EDITED: Seams like DDB was joking and ribbing me some, and I probably took his post too literally, ( I love it when I come out being the asshole! You would think I could get used to it by now.. )

You are right Andy this has been a good post. There is a lot of different opinions and they all work for how you hunt. As far as adjusting to different areas I have taken dogs from this wet climate and treed cats the next day in Nevada and Colorado the next day lion and fox in Arizona. They were not as good as what I have now. With these I have left here and went to the eastern Oregon or Eastern California to 12 below and caught cat the same day and trailed cat in July in 90 degrees in the desert. I may have a chance to go to south Texas next April And hunt my dogs. I would like to see how they will do. A good cat dog is a good cat dog they may have to adjust but I think it can be done any where. They will probably not be as good as the local dogs but they will make a showing. Dale Lee took his dogs All over the west, Mexico to South America and caught game with dogs that I feel were not as good as dogs that are available today. I am always trying dogs from different breeders not that my don't work but to see whats out there and if there is any thing better. IT is to easy to get stuck thinking that I have the best. There is things that I know my dogs could do better and there is always a better dog if I can find it. Dewey

Mr. Walton this is a question and only that as I am curious to know. Do you think you can come to Arizona and rig and consistently catch bobcats with your line of dogs?
Re: how many dogs do u need to effectively run bobcats?
The real question is how many dogs does it take where each of us live?
It's fun to discuss but IMO someone who lives 1000 miles away has no idea how many dogs I need or what kind. Likewise, I can't say what's the best way to catch cats in Oregon or Maine or anywhere else I haven't hunted myself.
Just an example: There must be a reason so many easterners prefer running dogs and so many westerners do not. Different areas require different tools to get the job done.
It is entertaining to read other's opinions but it would be more interesting if there was a list of credentials at the bottom of each post.

Trashy: I have hunted Arizona for lion. I have treed lion and trailed cat. I can box bobcats there it is like the desert in eastern Oregon, Eastern California and Nevada . I have boxed cats in those areas. My dogs have trouble with the cactus down there. On bare ground I will not tree as many as here. It is harder to push a track. I would hunt areas with heavy brush and hope for moisture in the ground. It would be fun to hunt it with a pack of strait cats dogs as I have now, no lions. I am one of the few in the west that runs a pack of dogs on cats it appears to be more effective for treeing cats. But what do I know. I have only hunted cats for 46 years, treed over a hundred in some years,I have treed them in 5 states from the coastal brush, high mountains, desert, pumice jack pine country and have treed cats in ever month of the year. I went in several areas that the locals said that they could not be treed and treed cats. I still have a lot to learn though. Dewey

After reading through this, I now realize how fortunate I was to have my roots planted in this portion of California. Probably the only bright spot in this state these days is that we have lots of cats and they are evidently the most easily caught of the nation. Around here, when we have moisture any good cat dog will effectively sack up the cats. A couple more dogs is handy and more enjoyable to me. More than about 4 seems to cause more problems than benefits, such as split races, dogs out of pocket, etc.
Now during the summer months of no moisture, our cats revert to very hard to catch. But I speculate that it has nothing to do with a transforming of the cat, but instead the lack of scent to actually put a cat up. Catching cats during this time typically is the credit of a special dog, very poor races, and pop ups. I don't get to experience this much anymore as the foxtails run me out of the woods. With my current schedule I it is too hard to keep a pack of dogs when they die faster than you can train them. If I hunted everyday it would be different as I could probably train replacements faster than they would die.

Patrick, you kinda summed up how I also feel. And from the sounds of it you have enjoyed time behind some very good cat dogs. thankyou John.
