How far does the average lion run? What's the longest race you have had?

After the jump a lion can only sprint about 400 yards before any quick dog will catch it on the ground. That can spell disaster for the lion or the dogs or both if it doesn't find a tree quick. The longest jumped race I had was this year, the lion tried running about 1/2 mile with a quick bayup thrown in there. The Tom was on its last legs when I pulled the dogs off. In area with alot of cliffs the cats can pull away from a lion quick and leave the dogs long behind. You will have to ask someone else about that type of country as i don't hunt that much.

Usually four to six hundred yards will put any lion in a tree but, that being said ,I've seen them go a hell of a lot farther. We've been hunting some ledges and low ceders in an area a couple hours from where we live and usually hunt the last few years. Two years ago we ran a female and treed her but as soon as she seen us ,from about 150 yards, she bailed and got on a big rock covered sidehill and we couldn't catch her again. She would cross the road then go back and forth ,we finally just caught the dogs before dark and came home. this last winter we went out there a few more times.First time out we popped one right up.Next time out we dumped on a female and i went up the road in about 6 inches of good snow, the dogs jumped the lion and she crossed 200 yards in front of me.Three hours later and 8 1/2 miles ,on the gps later, she made it back to within a hundred yards of where we originally jumped her and treed.Went out a couple weeks later with only about a quarter inch of new snow on bare ground and started another.Trailed her about 2 miles in some big nasty bluffs before we jumped and actually seen her.By this time the snow is all gone but they could run her pretty good but she crossed the canyon and went over on the same big rock covered hill from the winter before and just ran circles and circles, just like a bobcat, till dark.Dogs were usually within 2 or 3 hundred yards but the conditions were in her favor and we never could close the deal.I think the local guys that hunt this area are pretty rough on the females so it makes them damn jumpy. Where we normally hunt we got too many big trees and too deep of snow so they just go way high in a tree and feel safe. I was horn hunting 2 days ago on horses about 10 miles from where i live.I only took one old dog and one pup.I rode up a rocky canyon till it got too steep and tied my horse up and started hiking to where i'd seen some bulls wintering. About a mile in my pup strikes and starts trailing out,my old dog caught up pretty soon and they trailed it about 2 miles ,going pretty quick ,till i couldnt here them any more .I kept going into the canyon to where the elk had been.Pretty soon the dogs showed treed on the gps and i tell the guy i'm with that they prob just stopped at the creek cause the water is running so high.Anyhow we look for horns for a couple hours then went down to our horses. We ended up riding to within 30 yards of where they were treed .The lion must not have wanted to cross the creek very bad either. They trailed that one about 2 1/2 miles and most of the way it was jumped but it was all bare ground and mostley big ledges .They're both still walking like they been on a week long bear hunt.

cool stories tod , very true. I also agree with chilcotton if the lion has enough pressure on it 4 or 500 yards max sprint. but if they hang some dogs up on a 200 yard sprint and then slow down to 2nd gear, they can put a hell of a lot of ground between ya in a hurry. sometimes miles. when the lion riggin guys claimed they were riggin a 2 or 3 day old track because they caught the lion 3 miles away I called b.s. just cause a lion is 3 miles away don't mean it wasn't fresh IMO. it all depends on conditions and luck, but on any given day a lion can haul a$$ for a long time.
"Houndn'Ems Blueticks" if it smells like a cat, they'll catch it.
