snow melting from trees rained out red hot bobcat?

Post by bobcat187 »

It was nice clear day, started a bobcat before the sun came up. Had the bob jumped, the sun came out and started melting snow from the trees. Dogs couldn't smell it, the race ended.has anyone ever had this happen? You would think the dogs should still smell it, being its a red hot track.what happends to the sent? Does it just get washed down through the snow and they can't smell it?

I have several times. I've had jumped races and the dogs make a small lose in heavey timber with the snow dripping out of the trees or raining and if they don't pick up there loose's fast it can end a race. I think rain on snow, or a 50 degree day when the snow is still in the trees are the WORST conditions. I feel your pain it drives me nuts to hear a hot race go cold right infront of ya.

I've had it happen on hot tracks as well. They make a loss and just can't seem to pick it up. I think the snow on the ground melting/being wet doesn't help much either.

The drip off of trees will kill a tract fast. If it is jumped as long as there is no looses you are ok. Rain on snow makes tough tracking also. I assume your were hunting in a open area in Cali. or this happen before the end of February in Oregon, since your post is from Oregon. Dewey
